Job Description:

The Nurse Manager is responsible for the staffing and day-to-day management and administration of assigned unit. Supervises the caliber of treatment and care of the patients and performs RN duties as needed. This position must integrate company values into daily practice.

Essential Functions:

  • Under direction of the DNO, responsible for day-to-day nursing operations of patient care activities, including supervision of staff, tasks, and workflow. Manages staffing needs by evaluating census, acuity, skill level, and staff availability.
  • Assists with department hiring, employee training and development, counseling and disciplinary actions, performance assessment, and retention of assigned staff.
  • Provides education, direction, and mentorship of the nursing team’s function, purpose, and goals.
  • Ensures accreditation standards and other standards of care set forth by the state and accrediting agencies of TJC and CMS are met.
  • Communicates, collaborates, and coordinates with interdisciplinary team members to provide quality patient care and to ensure positive patient outcomes.
  • Responsible for tracking and surveillance of Infection Prevention Program trends, activities, and reporting.
  • Assists with developing, reviewing, and revising policies and procedures for patient care consistency with hospital, TJC, CMS, and other state and local standards and expectations for the patient care delivery.
  • Assists with direct patient care nursing responsibilities during high flow work times. Active presence on nursing unit for patient and physician rounds.
  • Collaborates with senior leadership and nursing department and is actively involved in performance improvement process, including data collection and analysis, and process improvement activities.
  • Helps identify, communicate, and resolve staff, patient, physician, and family concerns, issues, and appropriateness of care. Addresses concerns immediately and reports all problems or patient complaints to DNO. Initiates immediate steps to correct problems when appropriate.
  • May be required to work during inclement weather and other staffing emergencies.
  • Provides an environment conducive to safety for patients, visitors, and staff. Assesses the risks for safety and implements appropriate precautions. Complies with appropriate and approved safety and Infection Prevention standards.
  • Completes required trainings, as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support overall effectiveness of the organization.


Minimum Job Requirements 

Minimum Education & Experience :

  • Two years relevant experience required.
  • Three years’ experience in a hospital nurse management position preferred.


Required Licenses, Certifications, and/or Documentation:

  • Current state Registered Nurse license required.
  • CRRN certification required within three years of hire.
  • Current BLS certification required. ACLS required in TX.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and adherence to current nursing theory and practice, infection prevention, and wound care standards of practice.
  • Knowledge of accreditation standards to ensure adherence to all standards set forth by state and accrediting agencies of TJC and CMS.
  • Demonstrates general computer skills including data entry, word processing, email, and records management.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and complete complex tasks.

Physical Requirements Over the Course of a Shift:

  • A significant amount of sitting, walking, bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling, often for prolonged periods of time.
  • Both gross and precise motor functions.
  • Lifting/exerting of up to 50 lbs.
  • Possible exposure to bodily fluids.
  • Visual acuity required for patient assessment and documentation of care.
  • Acute hearing required for accurate patient assessment.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to operate equipment and computer keyboard.
  • Close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
