Are you an experienced nursing leader with a passion for operational excellence and patient-centred care? Macquarie University Health is seeking a dynamic and collaborative Nurse Manager, Patient Flow, Care and Access to join our Clinical Services team on a casual basis

This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in coordinating patient flow, optimising bed utilisation and supporting frontline clinical teams across Australia's only fully integrated academic health sciences centre. You will work at the intersection of clinical care, leadership and operational management — ensuring patients receive timely, safe and effective care while contributing to a culture of continuous improvement.

The role also leads and provides consultation and support services to Nurse Unit Managers during regular business ours. They actively participate in decision-making process related to patient flow, resource management, and staffing coordination.

Reporting to the Director of Nursing — MQ Health and FMHHS, the Nurse Manager, Patient Flow, Care and Access is responsible for the efficient and effective coordination of patient flow and management functions within the Clinical Services department. Key responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating patient flow and bed management across the hospital, collaborating with admission points to optimise bed utilisation through regular departmental rounds and efficient cross-departmental communication.

  • Managing and allocating casual pool and agency nursing staff across all areas of the hospital (excluding perioperative services).

  • Providing leadership, advice, coaching and support to Nurse Unit Managers (NUMs) to develop their workforce and manage complex staffing situations.

  • Assuming Senior Management responsibilities when they are unavailable during business hours, and executing operational management across Clinical Services, including risk identification and mitigation.

  • Identifying, managing and reporting serious issues, incidents and near misses, and providing debriefing when necessary.

Selection Criteria

  • Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse (Division 1).

  • Postgraduate tertiary qualifications in business management or a relevant field, with recent experience in an operational hospital management role in a private or not-for-profit healthcare setting.

  • Demonstrated advanced communication skills together with the capacity to interact with and influence health professionals across disciplines.

  • Proven ability to lead and develop a diverse team, including experience in workforce analysis, roster management and policy development.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead accreditation and continuous improvement processes in a healthcare facility and achieve sound outcomes.
