Nuclear Facility Intern

Argonne National Laboratory’s Nuclear Waste & Site Services (NWS) Division is responsible for the safe handling, processing, and disposal of nuclear and hazardous waste, alongside developing and implementing waste management systems and safety protocols. We value curiosity, communication, and safety, and are seeking a summer intern enthusiastic about applying their academic knowledge to real-world nuclear facility projects.

Position Summary: The NWS Division is looking for an intern working toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, data analytics, engineering, environmental science, or a related field. The ideal candidate will exhibit strong critical thinking skills, technical acumen, and adaptability, with experience working with structured data and technical tools such as Microsoft Excel and related Microsoft Office products.

This internship offers the opportunity to work daily with the NWS team and other student interns in a collaborative office environment, supporting a program-level radioactive material management tools.

Key Responsibilities:

The intern is required to be on-site every day to support the following projects:   

  • Data Validation: Use industry standard neutron transport and modeling tool ORIGEN to calculate decay and daughter products for a variety of isotopes for comparison with an existing dataset of similar calculations. 
  • Application Validation: Execute testing instructions to validate and verify custom safety software for tracking and managing radioactive material.
  • Spreadsheet Development: Create and use spreadsheets to compare and contrast ORIGEN results and organize information.
  • Technical Writeup: Create a professional document discussing the methods and results of the data validation

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Technical Skills:

Demonstrated interest or experience in:

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel (formulas, cell protection, auditing),
  • Data analysis and verification 
  • Basic scripting or automation (e.g., Python) and data mining are highly desired.
  • Strong adherence to detailed instructions.
  • Process & Systems Thinking:  Interest in understanding how technical tools support regulated processes, quality assurance, and compliance
  • Innovation & Automation:  Interest in exploring where automation or AI-assisted tools can improve efficiency, consistency, or review effectiveness

Standard Internship Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled full-time at an accredited institution and have completed at least three semester of schooling by the start of the program.
  • Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins.
  • Must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident at the time of application.
  • If accepting an offer, then you must pass a screening drug test
