Electroencephalogram (EEG) Technicians use specialized equipment and processes to monitor a patient’s nervous system activity. They set up, perform, and monitor EEG tests which record the electrical activity of a patient’s brain over time. EEG Technicians work under the supervision of epileptologists, neurologists, or other doctors. By performing bedside EEG monitoring in this role, you will help to create specialized diagnoses to assist in creating patient care plans as well as help to manage patients with chronic conditions. Caregivers in this role often feel fulfilled and valued for their work and feel as though they are able to make a positive change. A caregiver in this position works days from 8:00AM – 4:30PM, with on-call requirements.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Perform electroencephalographic examinations.
Select predetermined electrode combinations (montages) to obtain recordings, recognize artifacts and take appropriate steps to eliminate them.
Monitor on the same apparatus, other variables such as electromyograms, electrocardiograms, electro-oculograms, respiration, etc.
Observe patient with video recording equipment, ensure EEG and tape are lined up exactly and check focus, lighting and microphone.
Set-up patient for continuous monitoring at the bedside with video, if indicated.
Instruct nursing caregivers on pushing event button and care of videos.
Abstract relevant information from the patients' clinical record and obtain additional information.
Successfully obtain the American Board of Registration for Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) credentialing for a Registered EEG Technologist (R. EEG T.) within two years of hire.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Associate’s Degree in Electroneurodiagnostics or a related patient care field OR two years of direct patient care experience
Completion of an EEG Technician Trainee program
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross
Physical Requirements:
Manual dexterity in order to place electrodes precisely and to operate recording equipment.
Ability to push and maneuver EEG machine weighing 320 pounds and Evoked Potential machine weighing 420 pounds.
Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
Requires some exposure to communicable disease or body fluids.
Personal Protective Equipment:
Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
