About the Opportunity

JOB SUMMARY

The Campus News Reporter is a fast, accurate and excellent news writer who is responsible for producing great stories under tight deadlines for Northeastern’s award-winning daily news organization, News@Northeastern.  The individual(s) in this position are responsible for writing a range of news stories, features, and other materials, using the full array of digital storytelling platforms to promote Northeastern's research, academic programs, priorities, and community to internal and external audiences with the goal of increasing visibility and enhancing the university's reputation. 

The Campus News Reporter will be based on Northeastern’s campus in Oakland, California but will also be responsible for news coverage of the Seattle and Vancouver campuses.

This position is fully in-person and based on the Oakland campus with occasional travel to Seattle and Vancouver. Like all staff members in Communications, news reporters are occasionally required to work after hours and on weekend assignments.

This position is not eligible for remote work accommodations.

The news reporter will produce stories that showcase the university’s community, academic programs, faculty research and expertise, experiential learning, and campus life.

NGN news reporters are journalists with experience researching, gathering and reporting timely information with superb clarity and accuracy. They are great at evaluating news tips to develop story ideas, identifying sources, conducting interviews and thorough reporting, and writing excellent articles according to our editorial style and standards.

The Oakland-based news reporter is a curious storyteller who is relentless is their pursuit of newsworthiness. He/she/they report to the executive editor of NGN in Boston, and are part of a team of NGN news reporters covering stories across Northeastern’s global university system.

In addition to reporting on news from the university’s research and teaching enterprise, the Oakland-based news reporter covers timely news and events that captivates news cycles around the world, and identifies unique angles to make the reporting relevant to the university.

The news reporter is a fast, accurate and excellent news writer who is responsible for producing great stories under tight deadlines, in a creative, collaborative, fast-paced, environment. Stories the Oakland-based news reporter will be covering include but are not limited to scientific discoveries, research findings from multiple disciplines, faculty and student achievements, and all aspects of campus life.

Experience in higher education is not needed, nor is it desired.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Ability to identify meaningful, powerful stories of all kinds, including straight news, human interest, as well as technical and scientific subject matter while finding creative approaches to storytelling.  Team player who has an excellent work ethic.  Creative thinker with the ability to write fast, accurate news stories and craft and edit medium-length and long-read features. Ability to conceive visual and digital components.  Willingness to collaborate with visual and digital editors.  Ability to conceptualize stories while having an instinct for what's news. Excellent editing skills and experience shooting and editing video.  Prior experience with storytelling on various social media platforms. 

Must have:

• Bachelor’s degree

• 5 Years of Newsroom experience

• Excellent writing and copy-editing skills

• Excellent command of AP style

• Excellent sense of what is news

• Superb focus on detail and accuracy while maintaining speed

• Respect for short deadlines

• Solid grasp on data and how to use it to inform storytelling

• Familiarity with SEO

• Knowledgeable about current social media platforms and using them for storytelling

• Curiosity

• Flexibility

• Sense of humor

• Excellent work ethic

• Love for problem solving, multitasking, collaboration

Great if you also have:

• Experience with content management systems, WordPress in particular

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES

Responsible for identifying and writing a range of news stories, features, and other materials, using the full array of digital storytelling platforms to promote Northeastern's research, academic programs, priorities, and community to internal and external audiences with the goal of increasing visibility and enhancing the university's reputation. Stories the Campus News Reporter will be covering include but are not limited to scientific discoveries, research findings from multiple disciplines, university news announcements, faculty and student achievements, and all aspects of campus life.

Responsible for taking part in supporting the newsroom’s operations with various digital tools to help disseminate the stories we produce on multiple digital platforms.

Expected Hiring Range:

$82,725.00 - $116,846.25

With the pay range(s) shown above, the starting salary will depend on several factors, which may include your education, experience, location, knowledge and expertise, and skills as well as a pay comparison to similarly-situated employees already in the role. Salary ranges are reviewed regularly and are subject to change.
