What you will do- Provides education on surgical procedures, testing options, and hospital processes to patients, families, and referring providers. Improves patient outcomes through coordinated care, education, and follow-up. Ensures timely access to diagnostic services (e.g., EEG, MRI) and specialty care (e.g., epileptology, neurosurgery).
- Assists with patient assessments and required pre‑ and post‑operative labs. Communicates surgical updates and needs to OR staff, neurosurgeons, residents, fellows, and neurosurgery NPs.
- Coordinates with insurance providers and the Semmes Murphey Clinic to obtain admission precertifications, arrange peer‑to‑peer reviews when necessary, and secure authorization for surgical procedures.
- Reviews and screens referral records, gathers additional information from caregivers, and provides detailed admission instructions once scheduling is complete. Organizes upcoming cases and delivers daily surgical case updates to the neurosurgery team.
- Collaborates with the utilization review team to ensure timely collection of required clinical information so that patients in observation status can be appropriately converted to inpatient status when indicated.
- Facilitates transmission of imaging, pathology requests, and required clinical documents to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Tracks cases and supports OR block utilization. Ensures all surgical equipment needs and special requests are communicated to the appropriate representatives.
Education/Formal Training Requirements- Required - Bachelor's Degree Nursing
Work Experience Requirements- Required - Clinical healthcare 3-5 years
Licenses and Certifications Requirements- Required - BASIC LIFE SUPPORT - American Heart Association

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities- Knowledgeable assessment skills of patient with neurological disorders.
- Progressive knowledge in nursing care methods including data and outcomes management gained through independent clinical decision making skills.
- Knowledge of multiple policies and procedures across multiple disciplines including nursing unit, research and the FDA.
- Knowledge and coordination of RNS, ROSA, shunt setup and operations.
- Advanced critical thinking skills required to quickly access situations, determine and execute plan of action.
- Must be able to work independently and meet required deadlines.
- Proficient in Microsoft office programs.
- Ability to work independently without close supervision or professional guidance.
- Ability to provide written and oral communications with all levels of understanding including patients, parents, associates and physicians.
- Ability to work without close supervision and to exercise independent judgment.
- Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of workflow.
- Understanding of basic research principals and scientific methods.
- Independent clinical decision making skills.

Supervision Provided by this Position- There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this position.
Physical Demands- The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
- Must have good balance and coordination.
- The physical requirements of this position are: light work - exerting up to 25 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently.
- The Associate is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity, such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
