Network Engineer III

The Network Engineer III is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and evaluation of network systems and communications equipment in an Extreme Networks ecosystem (switches, routers and wireless APs). Leads the design, implementation, operation, support, deployment, and distribution of network systems and communications equipment. Identifies resources needed, develops schedules, and ensures timely completion of requests.

Job Description

Typical duties include but are not limited to:

  • Leads complex operational activities for maintaining network systems and communications services including patching, backups, configuration, updates, and documentation.
  • Leads the design and implementation of network systems and communications equipment.
  • Troubleshoots, completes preventative maintenance and corrective actions to ensure overall integrity and performance of network systems and communications services.
  • Executes data backup and recovery routines.
  • Researches and evaluates network architecture design, feasibility and cost studies.
  • Develops new techniques and procedures to enhance university networking and communications services.
  • Reviews progress, evaluates results, recommends new processes, and promotes best practices.
  • Troubleshoots data cabling issues.
  • Serves as an escalation point for Telecommunications Technicians.
  • Tracks tickets in work order system.

Other Duties:

  • Serves as essential personnel and provides assistance in the event of an emergency on campus.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • This position requires either nine years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Computer Science or related field and five years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Professional full-time experience with wide and local area networks, such as experience with common-carrier data networks.
  • Experience with large to very large enterprise computing environments that include multiple site locations.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher and Outlook).
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years of experience in data center and network design.
  • Experience with Extreme Networks Equipment.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Current mid-level network certification, such as CCNP/JNCIS/JNCIP/ECS.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Proven ability to think strategically and approach challenges with creativity.
  • Demonstrated track record of reliability, meeting goals, and holding oneself accountable.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working effectively across teams.
  • Knowledge of networking concepts such as OSI, TCP/IP, Routing and Switching (OSPF/RIP/BGP) principles, Palo Alto Networks, Juniper Networks, Extreme Networks, and Cisco Networks.
  • Knowledge of advanced layer 2/layer 3 services and their configuration.
  • Knowledge of QoS in VoIP networking.
  • Knowledge of wired and wireless networks, connections, wiring and cabling standards, and network management tools and processes.
  • Knowledge of local and wide area networking, communications, and related hardware and software.
  • Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
  • Ability to take the initiative to plan, organize, coordinate and perform work in various situations when numerous and competing demands are involved.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively within the community and willingness to contribute to a team effort.

  • Ability to design 802.11 based Wi-Fi networks and wired networks.
