Job Summary
The incumbent develops, manages, and improves the policies and programs covering all aspects of maintenance and repair of equipment and facilities throughout Canada to ensure efficiency and safety of the operation and the protection of company assets, equipment and facilities. The incumbent is also responsible for budget adherence and the explanation of variances. The role will be responsible for hosting two (Spring and Fall) walkthroughs with members of the Development and Facilities Team for all DC’s throughout Canada to review facilities existing conditions and discuss preventative maintenance for the building(s) with agreed upon action plans. Builds and maintains open and engaging relationships with various business units as well as Distribution Centre (DC) employees (ACEs) to meet established safety protocols, internal policies, and compliance with all related regulatory requirements of the facility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Safety – Operate in a way that builds trust with our customers, pets, and ACEs.
- Fosters a culture that revolves around Safety in and around the Distribution Centre.
- Partners closely with the Health and Safety Manager to ensure the DC is in line with OHSA and other Legislative requirements, Internal policies, 5S standards and overall proactive hazard and risk reduction environment.
- Actively monitors DC repairs and maintenance to ensure the highest standards are maintained.
- Maintains active vendor records inclusive of performance and validity of insurance and workers' compensation certificates.
- Regularly reviews trends on incidents, repairs, and maintenance to proactively drive sustainable solutions, trend reductions and hazard elimination.

- Responsible to promote and support an effective DC culture which recognizes individual and team.
- Develops and maintains strong and effective professional relationships with all areas of supply chain and related business partners.
- Conducts regular staff meetings and participates in town halls to keep DC Operations abreast of DC trends on repair frequencies to equipment, unsafe habits, key equipment trends and sanitation performance.
Expertise – Provide knowledge in an understanding and informative way.
- Process and results focused, with a passion for client satisfaction and a proven track record of identifying performance improvement activities and solutions
- Strong experience with fire suppression systems, GTP automation, conveyors, pack stations, semi-automatic wrappers, dock plates, facilities management, vendor management and industry standard technology.
- Actively engaged with General DC Manager(s) (GM) in preparing fiscal budgets and subsequent quarterly forecast adjustments for all DC locations throughout Canada.
- Prepares fiscal capital expenditure requests and submissions to the GM.
- Maintains control of all Maintenance and Repair expenses relating to the operation of the DC functions inclusive of assisting in variance reporting and explanations.
- Ensures approved capital expenditures are managed by appropriate resources, within budget and as per established protocols.
- Responsible for overseeing all related paperwork such as work orders, repair requests and invoices relating to area of responsibility.
- Is an ambassador for the DC, ACEs, and Pet Valu in all areas of the business internally and publicly.
- Has a forward-looking approach to identify risks and opportunities and initiate the appropriate changes in advance to mitigate impacts or realize improvements.
Efficiency – Use time and resources responsibly.
- Researches inefficiencies in problem areas and makes recommendations to GM regarding ideas or changes in methods, procedures, or systems, to improve productivity & quality.
- Validates maintenance on machinery and equipment is up to standard to limit downtime and costs from damage and unnecessary repairs. Recommend machinery and equipment purchases.
- Monitors performance of all equipment, automation, and systems to ensure efficiency is being achieved as designed and required.
- Audits all invoices for accuracy, ensuring accuracy of all purchase order requisitions and vendor billing.
- Maintains consistent continuous improvement approach to challenge the status quo and explore opportunities in all aspects of DC.
- Required to host Spring and Fall inspections with members of the Development and Facilities Team to review existing building conditions and to prepare for approval action plans to complete outstanding repair and preventative maintenance to the building.
Skills, Experience, Education, Certifications
- Technical diploma required, while an engineering degree is preferred or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of experience in a facilities maintenance management role
- Experience with 5S, Lean/six sigma and Continuous Improvement strategies and processes.
- A broad understanding of computer-aided processing equipment is an asset.
- Excellent troubleshooting, diagnostic, analytical sand problem solving skills.
- Experience with Auto Store or related Goods to Person automation is considered a major asset.
- Must have good, applied knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Must have excellent communication skills, verbal and written and be comfortable being an ambassador for the DC and company.
- Proven ability for successful Project Management and working with departmental and intercompany teams, change agent.
- Experience with preventive maintenance programs, PLCs, parts inventory, cost control, sourcing parts, managing budgets.
- Must have own transportation.
- Physical requirements (lifting, standing, etc)
- Travel 30% of the time (majority within GTA, some travel within Canada)
- Must be available to support the facility and team within a 24/5 operational environment.
