Job Summary: This position will serve as a Motor Vehicle Operator in Primary Care in a Veteran Affairs Health Care System (VA HCS) and supported catchment area in Corpus Christi, TX. The primary purpose of this position is to operate MMU at VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System (VATVCBHCS) locations, rural areas, and outreach events.

Major Duties:

  • Major duties and responsibilities include: Maintain a work-issued cell phone to allow dispatch by cell phone or two-way radio. Plan each route using maps to select the most efficient route for each trip. Obtain or have a valid CPR/BLS or appropriate resuscitation certificate to recognize various emergency medical situations, such as heart attacks, strokes, etc., as well as performing basic life support. Maintains proper following and braking distances, pivot points for turns, and proper speeds for each condition. Execute reasonable procedures for backing, parking, braking and will frequently maneuver in narrow streets with sharp turns. Monitor gauges for properly maintained oil pressure, speed, water temperature, fuel level, and battery levels. Remains alert for overheated brakes, clearances for overpasses and bridges, and weight limits for roads, ferries, bridges, etc. Perform road checks which include monitoring oil, air, fuel leaks, tire conditions, and diffuses any problems to ensure safe driving conditions. Maintain and clean the vehicle, perform driver maintenance, and perform minor emergency repairs such as checking and adding oil or checking tire pressure and adding air. Maintains vehicle maintenance and travel log to enter mileage, gasoline purchases, etc. Completes accident forms and forwards them to the supervisor when necessary. Performs incidental duty tasks that require light to moderate effort and the use of heavy power equipment and common hand tools. Perform tasks including cleaning and sweeping the vehicles interior area. Maintaining the vehicle's exterior appearance, ensuring clean oil and lubricants, performing adjustments on power equipment, and cleaning and storing vehicle equipment. Responsible for draining and refilling the water supply system (i.e., black and potable water), performing setup and takedown of MMU stairs and pullouts, and being knowledgeable and proficient in electrical plug-in and generator operations. Work Schedule: Tuesday - Friday; 7:00am - 5:30pm. The position may require working irregular tours of duty as needed by the service. To qualify for this position, experience must include: operating various patient transport vehicles utilizing lift systems when loading/unloading passengers; reading and understanding road maps to determine the most efficient and safest route to take; conducting driver maintenance and vehicle inspection; and utilizing work-issued communication devices (i.e., cell phone; two-way radio) to sufficiently communicate with dispatch and liaising with professional staff to expedite emergency. The quality ranking factor for this position is: Possess a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Basic Life Support (CPR, BLS), or appropriate resuscitation certificate. (Certification Required at time of applicant OR must be support by resume and will be verified if interviewed) PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The employee exerts physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate the vehicle's hand and foot controls; physical exertion and frequent stooping and bending. Perform manual operating of lift when necessary. Physical effort is required to stoop, bend, and climb to inspect a vehicle, to lift more than a sixty-pound tire/rim combination to change tires. In addition to the requirements described at the grade 5 level, greater physical effort is needed at the 6 grade level to maneuver the longer and heavier vehicles, especially when backing these vehicles. Ambulance or patient transport vehicle drivers may be required to assist patients into and out of the vehicle, which involves physical exertion and frequent stooping and bending. Incumbent must pass a VA Physical and adhere to all VA and DOT drug and alcohol testing and guidelines. WORK CONDITIONS: The employee operates vehicles in traffic and road conditions, including very congested urban traffic; interstate highways, city streets, county roads; rural unpaved roads; construction zones; and all-weather types. Employee experiences a variety of working positions (e.g. stooping, bending). The incumbent is required to work indoors and outdoors, experiencing various weather conditions. The incumbent is exposed to heat, cold, dust, rain, etc. The employee is at risk of exposure to dirt, fumes, grease, and other physical elements when setting up and tearing down MMU..In addition to the working conditions described at the grade 4 level, drivers at grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 operate vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads (or the equivalent) and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents. They drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems. In view of the skill and knowledge required and the responsibility exercised, this factor equates to the 6-grade level.
