The primary purpose of this position is to perform journeyman level vehicle structural analysis/damage repair, non-structural analysis/damage repair and mechanical/electrical repairs associated with body/collision repairs, painting, refinishing and replaces broken or damaged windows.

Major Duties:

  • - Performs journeyman level auto body work, repairing and rebuilding damaged vehicles and equipment such as mainframes, sub-frames and body structural components such as door posts, door frames, skeletal framework, main support components and sheet metal. - Removes and replaces major assemblies and sub-assemblies, performs electrical routing and repairs of damaged wiring, and components. - Performs various repairs such as cutting/grinding operations and replaces vehicle glass components to include windshields, door, and rear window glass, repair or replace radiators, patches or recovers upholstered areas of vehicles and covers. - Orders parts complete documentation and provides training and assistance to other personnel. Researches and orders parts using appropriate Technical Orders, repair manuals, and manufacturer's repair/parts manuals. - Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.

Qualifications: In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-3800 METAL WORK GROUP. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a MOBILE EQUIPMENT METAL MECHANIC without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of safety practices and procedures and environmental directives pertaining to hazardous materials and handling hazardous waste. Ability to interpret instructions, technical manuals, illustrations, specifications, diagrams, schematics, and manufactures manuals to make repairs and the ability to communicate effectively, provide training to others and maintain vehicle/equipment/shop/work order records. Knowledge of a variety of metals such as steel, aluminum, and alloys, and how their characteristics fit the needs and requirements of projects and knowledge of wide range of welding principles to include MIG/TIG/ARC, processes, and techniques and how various metals and metal alloys react to welding processes. Knowledge and ability to inspect and evaluate structural damage to sheet metal sufficient to plan and accomplish repairs and knowledge of technical practices in order to repair damaged sheet metal, fiberglass panels, Kevlar, vehicle frames with complex frame machines straightening equipment etc. Skill in using a wide variety of hand and power tools such as bending machines, soldering and welding machines, dollies, metal cutting saws and a wide variety of automotive refinishing equipment such as High-Pressure Low- Volume paint guns, buffing equipment/compounds, etc. Knowledge and skill for glass cutting/grinding equipment used to form glass for specific use and glass replacement methodology, interior repair to include seat upholstery and operation and maintenance of industrial sewing machines. Skill in troubleshoot entire electrical systems and related equipment to determine cause of malfunction and make required repairs for electronic devices in the circuitry and diagnose complex systems, such as Air Bag Systems (ABS) and Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS). PHYSICAL EFFORT: Works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Works on top of, under, and in tight compartments performing strenuous work while in cramped or awkward positions. Frequently lifts and carries items unassisted weighing up to 40 pounds and often exerts similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment. Frequently lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. May work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works both inside and outside. When inside, is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise that is difficult to talk above. When outside, is exposed to inclement weather conditions. Worker is exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, heat, and fumes. Worker is subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use and must be worn for long periods of time. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
