Position Overview:

Location: Edmonton, AB | Monday–Friday (5x2) | Full-Time, Permanent

As a Mining Performance Engineer at Finning Canada, you will partner directly with mining customers to improve fleet performance, efficiency, and overall value. You will conduct field and application studies, evaluate equipment performance, develop economic models, and recommend fleet and technology solutions that reduce cost per tonne.

This role includes both field and office work, with regular travel across Finning’s territory. You will analyze equipment data using Caterpillar systems, deliver technical insights to stakeholders, and collaborate with Finning and Caterpillar experts to support fleet planning, technology integration, and continuous operational improvement.

Job Description:

Accountabilities:

  • Optimize customer mining operations through technical support, equipment insights, and continuous improvement recommendations.
  • Work closely with customer operations, mine planning, and maintenance teams to ensure effective integration of CAT equipment and technologies.
  • Plan and execute on‑site performance studies with a strong focus on safety, accurate data collection, and professional customer engagement.
  • Analyze study results and prepare high‑quality technical reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders, including RFP support.
  • Provide technical guidance for fleet planning, equipment selection, and cost‑per‑tonne optimization.
  • Coordinate with Product Managers to deliver efficient, cost‑effective customer solutions.
  • Manage and reconcile budgets related to scale assets, including invoicing and expense tracking.

Major Job Functions:

Machine Application & Performance Studies – Field Work (30%)

  • Complete machine application and performance studies at customer sites.
  • Build engineered scale pads and install/calibrate mobile mining scales.
  • Collaborate with customer engineering, technical, operations, and dispatch teams to define study objectives.
  • Collect competitive equipment intelligence to support Finning’s market strategy.
  • Manage budgets, forecasts, and business cases for performance study assets.
  • Perform scale maintenance and calibrations in coordination with the OEM.
  • Identify and mitigate safety risks while meeting customer and Finning standards.
  • Coordinate logistics, equipment, contractors, and stakeholder engagement for field studies.

Analysis of Performance Studies (50%)

  • Analyze payloads, body configurations, placement, GVW, and compliance with 10/10/20 guidelines.
  • Prepare clear, accurate technical reports for internal review and customer delivery.
  • Present findings to stakeholders and address technical questions.
  • Compare competitive equipment data to demonstrate CAT performance advantages.
  • Share insights with Caterpillar product management and engineering teams.
  • Integrate study conclusions into Finning and Caterpillar marketing strategies.

Technical Reporting & RFP Support (20%)

  • Conduct simulations using Caterpillar proprietary tools and engineering software.
  • Interpret customer technical data to create use‑case models and economic frameworks for major proposals.
  • Ensure consistency of data and messaging across submissions in collaboration with marketing.
  • Produce polished, analytical reports suitable for all levels of leadership.

Education & Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in Mining Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Alberta, B.C., and Saskatchewan.
  • Minimum 4 years in a technical role; mining or heavy civil construction experience is an asset.
  • Minimum 1.5 years of experience working in an active mine environment.
  • Strong understanding of mining operations, maintenance practices, and equipment applications.
  • Solid knowledge of Caterpillar mining equipment, Caterpillar Technologies, and GPS/GNSS‑based systems.
  • Familiarity with major mining dispatch systems (MineStar, Wenco, Modular, Jigsaw).
  • Knowledge of mining operational and performance technologies used in large‑scale operations.
  • Understanding of mine planning concepts; experience with CAD/CAM, SolidWorks, Vulcan, Deswik, RPMGlobal, or similar tools (asset).
  • Strong analytical skills, including economic evaluation and discounted cash flow (DCF) modelling.
  • Understanding of commercial drivers and the ability to contribute to decisions in complex or high‑stakes scenarios.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, MS Project).
  • Experience with proprietary mining and fleet management software platforms.
  • Demonstrated project management experience leading technical or operational projects.
  • Travel required for this role.
