Who we are looking for

We are looking for a Middleware SRE Global Lead : Web reporting directly to the Global Head of Middleware SRE. The ideal candidate for this role will be responsible for the global leadership of day to day middleware operations reporting directly to the VP that owns all of middleware SRE (Data Transport, MQ, Kafka, Autosys, and Web). They will implement strategic initiatives, and act as a backup to the Middleware SRE lead. The candidate will be responsible for maintaining relationships across engineering, architecture, vendor partners, application and infrastructure reliability teams and collaborating with both technical and non-technical cross-functional partners. The candidate will be required to think and act as an owner, have an entrepreneurial spirit that views internal stakeholders as customers and service providers / engineering teams as trusted partners.

Why this role is important to us

The team you will be joining is a part of Platform Engineering SRE, a function that is vital to the company as we execute over 2 million job runs per day in Autosys, support 3,500 web sites on over 3,000 servers (both internal and external facing), 5 Billion messages per day traverse Kafka and MQ across more than 150,000 queues, and we handle over 2 million file transfers per day. State Street is one of 6 banks designated by the federal reserve as GSIB (Global Systemically Important Bank) with nearly 4 trillion USD in AUM. Our Middleware platforms touch all areas of the company and are the vital plumbing serving all of the banks activities. As a GSIB we operate under a strict oversight program from the Federal Reserve and have to ensure our systems are operating at full capacity 24/7.

What you will be responsible for

As a Middleware SRE Global Lead : Web, you will:

  • Manage the relationships with key strategic vendor partners
  • Manage a small team of direct reports in the US and about 20 dotted line reports in India / APAC
  • Drive automation & toil reduction initiatives
  • Present project status to SVP/MD audiences
  • Automate routine tasks via writing python scripts, shell scripting, and use of Ai / natural language algorithms
  • Work with external teams to build a  correlation engine for reduction of MTTI
  • Ensure the Middleware : Web platform is optimized and operating within SLI and SLO's
  • Configure, operate, and version control of middleware : Web tooling
  • Manage integration of events with Splunk for ticketing with Service Now
  • Migration of applications from one datacenter to another, including cloud adoption. Conduct impact analysis, testing, and implementation in a multicloud environment
  • Advise application development teams and on proper use of web technologies, best practices, adherence to and enforcement of State Street standards
  • Make technical recommendations for improvements by creating Technical PoCs to demonstrate performance improvements, and partner with the engineering team on new standards
  • Partner cross-functionally with Financial, Business, Technical, and Operational organizations to drive delivery on the short and long-term strategy
  • Participate in incident calls as needed, as well as post incident problem calls to recommend best practices and process improvements
  • Drive end users towards greater adoption of self service tools through training and coaching

  • Extensive experience supporting Middleware tooling in a large scale heterogeneous enterprise environment
  • Prior experience managing a small to mid-sized geographically dispersed team
  • Exceptional problem solving skills
  • Must be able to prioritize and triage in a fast paced, intense environment that sometimes has competing incidents requiring attention
  • Ability to translate complex technical details to business people in easy to understand language and translate high level business requirements into technical solutions
  • Knowledge of Windows, understanding of PowerShell scripting
  • Knowledge of Linux, understanding of shell scripting
  • Expertise with IBM Webshpere, Weblogic, Tomcat
  • Detailed knowledge of at least one other middleware platform (CTRL-M, Stonebranch, OPC, CA7, IBM MQ, Kafka)
  • Advanced scripting (Shell, Python, etc), knowledge file transport protocols (FTP, SFTP), encryption and authentication (certificates) are not required but will be helpful.
  • Familiarity with either Azure or AWS

Education & Preferred Qualifications

• Computer Science degree or equivalent work experience

• 10 years in a support role or 5 years in an intensive high paced SRE role at a similar sized bank

• Certifications in either AWS or Azure are helpful

Salary Range:

$120,000 - $202,500 Annual

The range quoted above applies to the role in the location specified. If the candidate would ultimately work outside of the location above, the applicable range could differ.
