Metrology Technician

This role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of measurement systems and instruments used in manufacturing and production processes. Responsibilities include calibrating precision instruments, maintaining measuring equipment, and conducting first article inspections (FAI) to verify product compliance with specifications. The role will work closely with metrology engineers and quality engineering teams to verify product dimensions, monitor quality, and ensure compliance with industry standards.
What will you be doing?
Responsible for the calibration, maintenance, and management of a wide range of measuring instruments and equipment, including micrometers, calipers, height gauges, coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), and optical measurement systems. The incumbent will perform regular calibrations according to schedule, troubleshoot discrepancies or malfunctions, and arrange repairs as necessary. The role also involves preparing and submitting accurate measurement reports, maintaining proper documentation, and ensuring compliance with internal procedures. Collaboration with quality assurance, engineering, and production teams is essential to ensure all measurements and inspections meet production and quality requirements, while liaising with external calibration service providers as needed.
In addition, the role focuses on continuous improvement of calibration and inspection processes to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and reliability. Responsibilities include maintaining instruments in a 5S manner, managing metrology inventory, supporting internal and external audits, and undertaking special assignments as required. The incumbent is also accountable for adhering to HSE, Sustainability, and Energy policies, preventing workplace injuries, environmental pollution, and energy waste, and reporting incidents while providing feedback for improvements.
What will you need to be successful?
The position is based in Penang and requires a Diploma or equivalent in Metrology, Mechanical, Engineering Technology, or a related field. Strong English communication skills, both written and spoken, will be an added advantage. Candidates should have a minimum of 3–5 years of experience in Metrology, calibration, or quality control within a regulated industry, with experience in the medical device manufacturing sector and knowledge of ISO 13485, FDA QSR 21 CFR Part 820, and MDSAP considered a plus.
The role requires the ability to interpret engineering drawings and apply measurement and inspection techniques, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). Proficiency in using various metrology instruments such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, CMMs, and optical measuring systems is preferred. Candidates should understand measurement principles and calibration standards, including ANSI, ASTM, and ISO standards. Strong problem-solving, analytical, communication, and documentation skills are essential for collaborating with cross-functional teams. Familiarity with Microsoft Office for report generation and data analysis is desirable, and the role requires the ability to sit or stand for extended periods while managing multiple tasks under pressure.
