Balazs NanoAnalysis, a division of Air Liquide Group, is seeking a Metrology Chemist III for its Morrisville, Pennsylvania site. Our Chemical Lab specializes in QC/QA, failure analysis and trace level contamination in gases used in the electronics industry. We utilize Gas Chromatography principles, FTIR and moisture analyzers as main instruments in our laboratory with a potential of using ICP-MS, various analyzers, and other analytical instrumentation.
The Metrology Chemist III will serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in analytical metrology, responsible for the strategic development, implementation, and oversight of all critical analytical instrumentation and testing procedures within the MVL Balazs Laboratory. This role is an opportunity to guide complex projects, mentor laboratory colleagues, and advance continuous improvement to ensure all measurement capabilities meet excellent international and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
Safety Requirements: Ensure safe completion of all tasks and keeping all related training up to date. Act as a safety leader, identifying and mitigating advanced risks within the lab environment.
Strategic Metrology Program Development: Design, implement, and oversee comprehensive Metrology programs, specifically for Gas Chromatography (GC) and other advanced instrumentation (e.g., ICP-MS, GC-MS, FTIR, UV-VIS), ensuring the highest reliability and accuracy of all analytical results.
Method Development: Develop new analytical methods for new and existing impurity analysis to meet internal and external requests. Review and update current analytical practices and methods to develop best practices for all analytical procedures.
Non-Routine Analytical Leadership: Lead, manage, and execute complex, high-impact non-routine analytical and failure analysis requests, providing expert interpretation and problem-solving for unique or critical challenges.
Technical Guidance and Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to colleagues and Lab Technicians, supporting them in advanced analytical techniques, troubleshooting, and metrology principles.
Advanced Instrument Qualification: Develop, validate, and oversee the execution of complex calibration, qualification, and validation of all new and existing laboratory instrumentation, with a focus on metrology.
Documentation and Procedures: Create, Review and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to reflect current best practices, regulatory requirements, and validated analytical methods, ensuring laboratory compliance and operational consistency.
Instrument Calibration: Assist in the calibration and qualification of laboratory instrumentation, with a focus on metrology principles. Ensure proper methodologies are being followed.
Data Integrity: Maintain meticulous records and documentation for all testing, analysis, and quality control activities in accordance with regulatory and company standards. Review analytical records and address any discrepancies.
Laboratory Standards: Oversee the entire lifecycle of laboratory standards, including the procurement, qualification, approval, and management.
Stability Reviews: Direct the review and analysis of Long Term Stability calibrations across all critical instrumentation to proactively ensure the sustained accuracy and reliability of instrument metrology.
Analytical Development Strategy: Provide input on new analytical instrumentation, performing market research on the new and best instrumentation available. Make recommendations based on existing capabilities and planned future capabilities.
Metrology Summit: Attend and participate in quarterly metrology summits. Present topics and engage in knowledge sharing with Air Liquide worldwide business leaders.
Technical Community Leader: Strive to become a technical community leader, providing technical knowledge and assistance to other Air Liquide sites.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Metrology, or a related scientific field
6+ years focused on advanced analytical instrumentation, method validation, and quality control/assurance.
6+ years of experience in a laboratory environment including advanced Gas Chromatography and method development,
Proficient in computer skills such as LIMS, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Suite, and Spotfire or other SPC graphing tools.
Must have the flexibility and initiative required to manage high-priority, time-sensitive projects and provide expert coverage as needed.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present complex technical information to both internal and external customers.
Strong organizational and meticulous record-keeping skills are essential.
Must be able to work late hours, some holiday & weekend when coverage may be required.
Must be able to work in a team environment with good communication skills.
Must have initiative and be self-motivated.

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Deep theoretical and practical expertise in Gas Chromatography (GC, GC-MS) and associated advanced measurement principles, troubleshooting, and method development.
Experience with the development, review, and revision of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and quality system documentation.
Exceptional problem-solving and critical thinking skills, with the ability to work independently as a technical lead on complex analysis.
Expert knowledge of all Metrology studies including Instrument Detection, Method Detection, Accuracy, Linearity, Gauge Repeatability and Reproducibility testing, including full Measurement Uncertainty Analysis.
Expertise in the design and use of advanced gas dilution systems for the purposes of performing complex Metrology Studies and reference material preparation.
Working knowledge of other analytical techniques, such as ICP-MS and FTIR, is required.
Working Knowledge of statistical software such as JMP.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Metrology, or a related scientific field
