General Information:

Mentors supervise and provide an enriching and educational experience for a cohort of up to 25 high school students. The ideal applicant is energetic and enthusiastic about academic enrichment and the college experience. Successful Mentors take the initiative to solve problems, communicate with clarity and empathy with students and staff, and maintain strong organizational habits to manage daily responsibilities effectively. This academic support role collaborates with other Mentors, the Assistant Academic Director, and the Academic Director to implement the program..

 

College Prep:

The College Prep Program is a 5-week program designed to help high school students develop valuable skills to succeed in college and beyond. Students take undergraduate-level courses, attend lectures, test preparation seminars, and group sessions led by program staff. The College Prep Mentors will help facilitate sessions on topics such as college life, the application process, and study tips. In addition, they will hold coffee hours for the students to drop in and meet with them to ask questions, talk about their class, etc.

 

Responsibilities:

Program Development

●       Completing online and in-person training.

●       Learning about the program subject(s) to understand course material and better support the student experience.

●       Assisting in the final planning stages of the program.

●       Planning and preparing for discussions sections and team building.

●       Working with other Mentors and the Assistant Academic Director (AAD) to develop and execute group hands-on experiences.

 

Program Implementation

●       Attending and engaging in all program activities, including but not limited to lectures, guest speakers, discussions, and off-site visits.

●       Maintaining daily and event attendance records.

●       Providing daily academic and classroom support, such as: leading check-ins, discussion sections, and/or reflections, assisting students with assignments and projects.

●       Ensuring students are aware of and engaged in daily activities.

●       Answering general inquiries and questions about schedules, policies, and procedures.

 

Student Affairs

●       Building community and belonging amongst the students and staff.

●       Creating a safe and supportive academic environment for students.

●       Working collaboratively with residential staff to create an inclusive and welcoming environment.

●       Enforcing University policies, procedures, and regulations for students.

●       Establishing appropriate boundaries with students in compliance with the University's Protection of Minors Policy.

●       Providing support to students dealing with personal concerns (e.g. stress, homesickness, relationship difficulty) that may detract from their academic experiences.

●       Providing support to students facing insecurity, unfamiliarity, and other challenges associated with adjusting to college learning and a diverse university campus.

●       Reflecting with students on their learning processes and their academic and professional goals.

●       Reporting unsafe, inappropriate, or concerning behavior, student conduct issues, and emergencies to appropriate parties for resolution.

●       Connecting students to resources on campus, as appropriate.

●       Other duties as assigned.

 

Schedule:

●       Training Part I (Online) | May 18, 2026

●       Training Part II | June 2 - 4, 2026 or June 16 - 18, 2026

●       College Prep in Session | July 6 - August 7, 2026

 

Work Hours:

●       Approximately 5 - 10 hours before the first program launches.

●       Approximately 15 - 25 hours per week while the program runs.

●       Some evening, weekend, and overtime hours may be required once programs begin (not to exceed 20 overtime hours per week).

 

Terms:

●       Mentors are designated for the spring and summer 2026 term with dates of employment from May 18 through August 8, 2026.

●       Mentors are expected to live among College Prep Program participants and will facilitate evening residence study halls as scheduled.

●       Mentors are precluded from having simultaneous obligations that conflict with scheduled hours, which include most of the day on Fridays while the program is running.

●       Employment with the University is at will and may be terminated by Mentors or the University at any time without notice or cause. Employment with the University should not be considered as an implied or explicit guarantee of employment or as a personal contract.

●       Failure to meet the standards and expectations of the University, the School of Continuing Studies, and the Office of Summer and Special Programs may result in termination. Mentors forfeit any provided university housing and meal plan once terminated.

 

Compensation:

●       Pay: $18.40 per hour.

●       Housing: University housing provided during assigned working weeks and during off-weeks between program assignments.

●       Meals: Meal plan provided during assigned working weeks and during off-weeks between program assignments; boxed meals available during off-site visits that overlap with breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

●       Current or graduating undergraduate or graduate student or recently graduated.

●       Proficiency in MS Office, Google Suite, and Zoom.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

●       Current or graduating GU student.

●       Experience working in an educational setting.

●       Experience working with faculty.

●       Experience working with high school students.

●       Supervisory and/or leadership experience.

●       Institutional knowledge of Georgetown University.

●       Knowledge or experience relating to the Academy subject matter is a plus.
