Job Summary: About the Position: The position is located at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth Virginia Microbiology Laboratory Department. This laboratory operates as the DHA's reference testing site for the Tidewater Market in Virginia to include multiple Navy, Army and Air Force clinical sites. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Major Duties:

  • Perform a wide variety of clinical laboratory test procedures within the Microbiology section in the Department of Pathology and Area Laboratory Services (DPALS), a College of American Pathology (CAP) accredited full service laboratory.
  • Perform microbiology tests and examinations using both automated and manual techniques and involving the operation of machines, instruments and equipment common to the microbiology specialization.
  • Receive specimens from Specimen Processing, clinics, wards, Troop Medical Clinics (TMCs), and other DOD facilities.
  • Operation of instruments and equipment used in performing tests and examinations involve function verification checks, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and making fine and delicate adjustments when controls exceed defined tolerance limits.
  • Assist in training newly assigned civilian and military laboratory personnel in the performance of microbiology tasks and the related quality assurance, instrument maintenance and implications of various results.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing testing procedures in a clinical laboratory; calibrating or maintaining clinical laboratory instruments; and documenting results through clinical laboratory automated systems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: One full year (18 semester hours) of progressively higher level graduate education in a field directly related to the work of the position such as Medical Lab Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) AND Certification Requirement: Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT); Medical Technologist (MT); or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) is required.
