The Medical Scientist will work as a member of the Medical team to support Cytokinetics portfolio with products in different phases of lifecycle and relay field-based clinical/medical insights back to Cytokinetics to impact the future strategy so Cytokinetics can continue to bring innovative medicines to patients with cardiac diseases.
Reporting to the Associate Medical Director and in close cross-functional alignment, the Medical Scientist is a scientific professional who serves as a key field-based scientific resource for healthcare providers, patients, industry partners and internal colleagues. This role will come with high visibility in our company with critical cross-functional relationships across Medical Affairs, Clinical Development / Operations, and Commercial. This role will focus on key opinion leaders and other HCPs in the cardiovascular space and especially in the hypertrophic cardiomyopathy therapeutic area, but also support pipeline products in development.

Role and Responsibilities
- Identify national, regional, and local Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) involved in Expert Centers of cardiomyopathy and engage them in proactive and reactive scientific exchange
- Maintain and enhance existing scientific collaboration and professional relationships with hospital-based HCPs in priority but also office-based HCPs within a defined geography (physicians, genetic counselors, nurses, payers, pharmacists, hospital teams, investigators, etc..) involved in the therapeutic management of patients with cardiac diseases to expand research, advisory, and educational partnership opportunities; identify areas of unmet medical need; and assure thoughtful exchange of current medical information related to products in development and therapeutic areas of importance
- Facilitate access to educational grant request process and facilitate alignment of IIP (Investigator-initiated Program) activities with internal areas of scientific interest.
- Serve as the primary Cytokinetics external Medical Affairs representative for key stakeholders in assigned territories, providing deep and advanced disease state and product information as well as facilitating collaborations aligning with Cytokinetics’ strategic goals.
- Ensure prompt intake and responses for medical information and requests for Medical Affairs support.
- Serve as a scientific expert within the country and Europe (when needed) at key medical and scientific conferences, advisory boards, clinical investigator meetings, internal meetings, and patient advocacy group meetings
- Consistently collect, report and represent clinical insights and unanswered questions received from external contacts to the appropriate channels internally.
- Conduct routine literature searches and communicate regularly with each other to assure that the entire Medical team benefits from individual learning whenever it is relevant.
- Build and maintain a high-level of scientific knowledge and understanding about disease state, underlying science, treatment guidelines, available treatment agents and options, as well as heart failure and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy therapies under development.
- Maintain a superior understanding of current trends in clinical research, competitive developments, patient care, and their impact on Cytokinetics’ medical strategies
- Work with Medical Affairs and other internal colleagues on initiatives including medical information, publications, medical education, grants, speaker training, and other educational programs both within the country and internationally
- Provide initial and ongoing disease and product training to internal and field personnel.
- Provide support to our clinical development programs by serving as a key point of contact for company-sponsored trial investigators, investigator-initiated research, and registries consistent with company objectives and regulations
- Generate Field Medical Affairs plans to identify collaborative opportunities with KOL’s and institutions
- Identify congresses and scientific national and international meetings that are interesting and relevant to attend. Review scientific program of relevant conferences, attend sessions, support exhibit booth operations, and contribute to a timely written conference report summarizing key information, activities, and competitive intelligence to colleagues
- Document accurately and timely his/her activities within applicable company databases and platforms
- The Medical Scientist role entails not only scientific and customer expertise, but also requires the ability to understand and effectively utilize approved resources to fulfill administrative, procedural, and legal requirements in order to address the customer needs. These activities may include proficiency in computer skills and database entry, continual compliance of all procedural requirements of the role and appropriate utilization of available resources.
- Ensure compliance with all Cytokinetics policies and procedures as well as local regulatory and legal requirements.
Educational requirements
- Advanced biomedical sciences degree (Dipl., MD, PharmD, PhD, Bachelor's + Master's degree in science (5 years of higher education)
Professional work experience
- Medical Affairs experience (minimum 3 years), with field experience, within biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry and a record of significant accomplishment: Experienced MSL, Medical Advisor, Medical Manager or similar with thorough understanding of the biopharmaceutical industry
- Experience in cardiac diseases (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy/heart failure) and/or rare diseases is preferred
- In depth knowledge of Medical Affairs organizations, including related operating processes, policies, procedures and regulations
- Knowledge of applicable pharmaceutical regulations as well as other industry rules and guidelines along with medical and clinical terminology knowledge
- Strong business acumen; has working knowledge of the multi-disciplinary functions involved in a company's drug development process, e.g. research, development, clinical operations, biostatistics, regulatory, commercial
