Job Summary
Hours: Tuesday-Friday 1300-2330
The Medical Laboratory Assistant II will serve to train new lab assistants and help ensure maximum operational support to the core laboratory teams.
Reports to Supervisor, Medical Laboratory
Job Specific Responsibilities
Daily assignments may include but are not limited to:
• Functions as an assistant to laboratory staff in actions(s) assigned
• Train new lab assistants and students
• Handle specimens that include blood, urine, bodily fluids, tissues, stools, and other material for biological and chemical analysis
• Perform minor CLIA waived laboratory tests that do not require licensure or certification (ie.,pregnancy testing, MONO, and certain other rapid testing)
• Follow up on orders from clinics and vendors
• Assist with on-call coverage
• As needed, assist with calibrating equipment and troubleshooting automation line and other laboratory equipment
• Resolve billing and order issues
• Resolve conflicts and concerns for lab personnel
• All other assigned duties related to the medical laboratory
Education and Experience
• High School Diploma or GED
• +1 year of medical laboratory experience
• Basic knowledge of lab methods, procedures, and medical terminology,

Skills and Abilities
• Understands and can articulate correct procedures to accurately identify patients, label specimens, and verify there is adequate sampling for the testing ordered
• Good knowledge of test menu and ability to manage requisitions/orders
• Must be able to effectively interact with and lead people from all backgrounds
• Demonstrate ability to perform basic functions in the laboratory and hospital information system
• Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently
Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships
This position has much interaction with nursing staff and other hospital departments
Physical Capabilities
The Lab Assistant II can expect to stand for long periods of time and walk frequently. This position also requires frequent stooping, sitting, reaching, bending and kneeling. The incumbent may also be required to carry items up to 50 pounds. Near visual and color acuity is required. Hours may be irregular to accommodate department staffing requirements.

This position is subject to inside environmental changes that may include constant change in temperatures and minimal exposure to cleaning, staining, and testing chemicals
