Job Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Lab Supervisor and other Medical Technologists in the assigned area.  Performs a variety of laboratory examinations and tests assuring rapid and accurate results.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Performs and reports various laboratory tests in the assigned section in accordance with prescribed procedures.
  • Calibrates, standardizes equipment and performs minor equipment maintenance.  Recognizes instrument malfunction and out of control test results and seeks assistance from Clinical Lab Supervisor or Technologists.
  • Performs quality control to ensure proper functioning of instruments, reagents and procedures. Performs proficiency testing.
  • Recognizes instrument malfunction and out of control test results and seeks assistance from Clinical Laboratory Supervisor or Technologists.
  • Assists in specimen collection as necessary and assists in specimen processing and accessioning as appropriate.  Assists in the maintenance of clerical records.
  • Is familiar with LIS (and HIS if appropriate).
  • Assists with special projects and other duties as assigned.  Maintains positive work environment.
  • Assists in teaching responsibilities for other MLTs and Tech Extenders as well as training and orientation.
  • Assists Technologists in supply management for section.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

Registration as MLT (ASCP), RCT, MLT (AMT), CLT (NCA).  All newly hired technical staff must pass an approved certification exam within (5) months of placement in this occupational classification.

Education Required:

Must be a High School or GED Diploma Graduate.  Associate degree required in Applied Sciences.  MLT (ASCP) registry or equivalent as determined by the Professional Director.   

Experience Required:

MLT experience and patient-facing experience is preferred.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Must be able to use visual acuity to see monitor screen, computer and hard copy materials. Must be able to hear and verbally communicate in person and over the phone or radio. Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time (up to 2 hours).Must be able to comprehend and learn operation of various office equipment. Must have functional range of motion of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spines, upper and lower extremities with a grip strength of 50-60# specific to job evaluation. Must be able to forward reach, overhead reach, bend, squat, kneel and apply proper body mechanics during the transfers and transport supplies and/or equipment using proper body mechanics. Must be able to lift up to 10# specific to job evaluation.
