Position Overview
The Medical Assistant assists physicians and nurses with patient care while coordinating patient flow within the clinic. This role performs blood draws, venipunctures, finger sticks, IVs, port-caths, and supports clinical procedures. Working under the general direction of the Site Director, the Medical Assistant I ensures a safe, organized, and patient-centered environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify patients and perform vital signs with accurate documentation.
  • Perform venipunctures, finger sticks, IVs, and flush or remove port-a-cath or IV needles.
  • Log and label specimens accurately with date, time, patient name, and ordered test.
  • Enter patient information, labs, and tests into the EMR per physician orders.
  • Set up trays for bone marrow tests, biopsies, pap smears, and assist physicians with exams.
  • Report patient distress to the physician or nurse.
  • Present phone calls professionally to physicians and nurses.
  • Direct patients to appropriate departments (Chemotherapy, Radiology, Sub Wait, Phlebotomy, Wings).
  • Organize, clean, and stock exam rooms and work areas; report low inventory.
  • Operate and perform EKGs.
  • Verify insurance information prior to scheduling tests.
  • Learn chemotherapy drug list and identify vesicant or irritant drugs in charts.
  • Coordinate patient flow and interface with Radiology, Chemotherapy, Front Desk, and Management.
  • Communicate with Physicians, Laboratories, Hospitals, patients, and families regarding lab/test results.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and a safe environment.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, strong attendance, and compliance with clinic policies.
  • Assist with training and orientation of new employees as assigned.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • One year of college or technical school;
    OR six months to one year related experience and/or training;
    OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Proficiency in EMR, word processing, and e-mail.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, procedures, and correspondence.

  • Ability to apply common-sense reasoning to written and oral instructions.
  • Flexibility with work schedule and travel to satellite offices as required.
