Summary

The Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) seeks an experienced, collaborative Media Partnerships Lead to increase visibility and credibility for one of the world's most beloved brands: Wikipedia. Reporting to the Director of Brand the successful candidate will join the Wikimedia Foundation Brand Studio, an in-house brand and creative service group within the Communications Department. They will work closely with colleagues in social media, PR, executive communications, and Commercial Partnerships (Enterprise). 

Guided by organizational goals, the Wikimedia mission, and changes in the competitive market, the Media Partnerships Lead will develop partnerships and connections that increase brand visibility and understanding of Wikipedia. Key audiences include mission-aligned organizations, media companies and social media platforms. They will network with these groups to ensure our brand positioning and social publishing impact, while identifying opportunities for collaboration in relation to brand awareness. This will involve entering the role with strong connections across the media and technology ecosystem and establishing and nurturing relationships with media companies, mission aligned organizations, journalists, networks of brand publishers, and social media platforms. Please note this is not an entry level position. Candidates must have existing relationships, as well as extensive experience in partnership development across fast changing media landscapes.

You are responsible for:

Brand & Media partnerships   

  • You will help us build relationships within the media and publishing industries, cultivating champions of our work.
  • You will find additional opportunities/platforms for us to share our key messages at scale within the media and among mission-aligned organizations.
  • Aligned with our communications strategy, you will co-develop speaking opportunities and events with media companies and mission-aligned organizations (e.g. panels, discussions, thought leadership) to help boost the reach of our brand visibility and key messages.

Social Media Partnerships   

  • You will establish and maintain relationships with Social Media platform representatives in order to ensure Wikipedia branded publishing achieves the highest possible impact. 
  • You will work in tandem with the Wikimedia Foundation’s Social Media team to support their short and long term goals. 

Off-platform Brand Visibility  

  • You will drive brand positioning and visibility goals in close collaboration with the Brand Studio’s Global Brand Manager and Brand Strategists. 
  • You will collaborate with staff from the Product + Technology Department and Global Advocacy team to support reader and content reuse goals.

Experience and skills that are important to us:

  • Media Partnerships: Minimum 8 years of relevant experience, with a strong understanding of core brand strategy frameworks (research, data analysis, brief writing, brand positioning). Proven ability to broker global partnerships across audiences.
  • Community Experience: Experience working with brands that have community stakeholders, where decision-making is diffused across many parties and volunteers hold important roles in brand positioning and articulation. 
  • Global Experience: Experience working on global socio-technical platforms and brands in international markets. You've partnered with diverse vendors and engaged international audiences.
  • Collaborative: You thrive in collaborative environments, working effectively in group project scenarios and teams with shared decision-making. You have a proven record of working well across a wide range of disciplines from PR to Product, Design to Donor Relations. You are comfortable operating in a complex, consensus-driven environment. 
  • Connections: You have a good range of connections with partners who can help uplift our potential for mission aligned partnerships.
  • Inspiring: Ready to educate and inform WMF staff, Wikipedia Volunteers and partners about media partnerships development.
  • Outcome-oriented: You are mindful of the top-level goals and can develop and adapt plans to meet them. As a self-organized lead, you will own the activities to create outcomes.

The Wikimedia Foundation is a remote-first organization with staff members including contractors based 40+ countries*. Salaries at the Wikimedia Foundation are set in a way that is competitive, equitable, and consistent with our values and culture. The anticipated annual pay range of this position for applicants based within the United States is US$114,758 to US$177,097 with multiple individualized factors, including cost of living in the location, being the determinants of the offered pay. For applicants located outside of the US, the pay range will be adjusted to the country of hire. We neither ask for nor take into consideration the salary history of applicants. The compensation for a successful applicant will be based on their skills, experience and location.
