Intrinsic robotics

Mechatronics Lab Engineer

Mountain View, California Full Time

Intrinsic is Alphabet’s bet aiming to reimagine the potential of industrial robotics. Our team believes that advances in AI, perception and simulation will redefine what’s possible for industrial robotics in the near future – with software and data at the core.

Our mission is to make industrial robotics intelligent, accessible, and usable for millions more businesses, entrepreneurs, and developers. We are a dynamic team of engineers, roboticists, designers, and technologists who are passionate about unlocking the creative and economic potential of industrial robotics.

Role

As a Mechatronics Lab Engineer on the robotics manipulation R&D team, you will be the primary owner of the physical health and operational readiness of our cutting-edge robotic workcells. You will lead the mechanical design, assembly, and electrical wiring of these cells, ensuring they are optimized for AI-based research.

This is a highly interdisciplinary role requiring a blend of traditional mechanical engineering, electrical troubleshooting, and software integration. You will be responsible for the entire maintenance lifecycle of a workcell—from initial build and sensor integration to debugging electrical circuits and making small modifications to Python scripts to support new experiments. You will also oversee the functional lab environment, including hardware procurement and workspace organization.

How your work moves the mission forward

  • Design and build robust mechanical structures and sensor mounts for advanced robotic workcells.
  • Execute full maintenance and debugging of workcells, covering both mechanical wear-and-tear and electrical signal integrity.
  • Perform electrical wiring and integration of computer-controlled hardware, ensuring safe and reliable operations.
  • Modify and run scripts (Python-based) to update operational workflows and support researcher experiments.
  • Manage lab logistics, including the purchasing of hardware, inventory management, and modernizing lab infrastructure.
  • Collaborate across teams to bridge the gap between physical hardware and AI software development.

Skills you will need to be successful

  • BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
  • Hands-on mechanical expertise, including experience with assembly, fabrication, and structural design.
  • Strong electrical proficiency, specifically in wiring, cable management, and using diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters, oscilloscopes) to troubleshoot circuits.
  • Basic programming knowledge, with the ability to read and make minor modifications to Python code.
  • Proven ability to manage hardware systems independently within a lab or R&D environment.
  • Adaptability to jump between physical repairs, logistical tasks, and software-related challenges.

Skills that will differentiate your candidacy

  • Direct experience with robotic systems (e.g., Fanuc, Kuka, UR, or similar industrial arms).
  • Familiarity with ROS (Robot Operating System).
  • Experience in a research or prototyping environment where requirements change rapidly.
  • Advanced fabrication skills (e.g., 3D printing, CNC machining, or laser cutting) for custom mounting solutions.
