OVERVIEW 

Marathon Petroleum Company’s Illinois Refining Division in Robinson, IL is seeking a Mechanical Reliability Engineer. The Mechanical Reliability Engineer will report to the Reliability Manager and will provide technical/troubleshooting assistance in resolving equipment design, operation, and maintenance problems for all rotating equipment located within assigned area teams.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Provide technical/troubleshooting assistance in resolving equipment design, operation, and maintenance problems for all rotating equipment located within assigned area teams; collaborate with internal and external subject matter experts as required. 

  • Utilize reliability tools such as reliability analytics, failure analysis, and cost analysis to evaluate and improve reliability of rotating equipment systems. 

  • Maintain accurate equipment records and recommend spare parts for rotating equipment. 

  • Write PRFs for reliability improvement projects, equipment upgrades, etc. including financial justification (life cycle cost analysis) and facilitate DSP development. 

  • Champion (MOC) Management of Change as appropriate 

  • Develop turnaround work scopes based on ITPM and Mechanical Integrity requirements for rotating equipment. 

  • Manage Preventative Maintenance (PM) plans for rotating equipment. 

  • Help establish equipment monitoring plans and control limits for operability and predictive maintenance. 

  • Develop, review, and edit maintenance procedures and work practices based on industry standards, MPC standards, and refinery experience. 

  • Ensure equipment repairs meet or exceed OEM specifications or MPC Standards. 

  • Lead/participate in pre-job and after-action task reviews with craftsmen on major equipment repairs.  

  • Provide technical assistance to aid decision-making on repair solutions during turnarounds and unplanned equipment outages.  Available to take calls and work overtime on off-hours as required to support refinery operations. 

  • Review corporate specifications for potential improvements based on industry and site-specific experience as appropriate. 

  • Provide technical expertise and support to capital project development. 

  • Lead/participate in incident investigations related to rotating equipment. 

  • Participate on Advisory Groups and support corporate initiatives. 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

 

Minimum (Required) Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering 

  • Two (2) years or more of experience required 

  • Valid driver’s license 

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Four (4) years or more experience with design, installation, troubleshooting, and repair of rotating equipment including compressors, pumps, steam turbines, electric motors, blowers and fin fans. 

 

Skills 

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software products 

  • Ability to read, redline, and interpret equipment drawings and diagrams 

  • Able to troubleshoot equipment/system problems 

  • Self-motivated 

  • Able to manage multiple tasks 

  • Good communication 

  • Detail oriented 

  • Strong mechanical aptitude 

  • Willingness to learn

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS 
This position works on a 4/10 schedule (M-Thu, 10 hours a day). Additional hours as required for turnarounds, outages, off shift technical support and projects.
