What you will be doing

Rolls-Royce has been at the forefront of aerospace propulsion since our engine, the Eagle, took flight in 1915, through to the current day where we have set two speed records for electric aviation with our Spirit of Innovation demonstrator.  We continue our mission to Pioneer the Power that Matters as we accelerate the journey to more sustainable aviation, driving forward the electrification of flight through design, development and integration of advanced electrical machines for next-generation aircraft.

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer with experience in electrical propulsion, energy storage, critical systems or aerospace mechanical Design to join our multi-disciplinary team on our challenging journey as we lead the way in powering sustainable, high-performance, cutting-edge platforms.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop high-performance electrical motors, energy storage systems and electromechanical systems for aerospace applications by understanding and solving challenging engineering problems
  • Perform calculations and conduct structural, thermal, and vibration analyses
  • Collaborate with electrical, thermal, systems engineers, interfacing parties and other stakeholders to optimise motor architecture and packaging.
  • Work closely with suppliers, manufacturing partners, and testing teams from concept to production.
  • Lead the design through gated review process, presenting technical to Seniors Engineers.
  • Create detailed 3D CAD models, assembly drawings, technical reports and other documentation in line with standards and processes that are self-checked and of high quality.
  • Formally manage technical risks, ensuring that the designs are Safe, Reliable and Durable.
  • Drive down technical risk through use of small-scale prototypes, material testing, manufacturing trials or similar, in order to complement and validate analyses
  • Work with Validation and Verification Engineers to develop a V&V strategy.

Position qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or Master's in Engineering or regional equivalent qualification, or equivalent experience
  • Experience of innovative and collaborative working within cross-functional teams to deliver high performance product designs.
  • Strong technical knowledge in mechanical design methodologies and engineering concepts which include but are not limited to manufacturing engineering, cost engineering and product definition.
  • An ability to apply logical, analytical and innovative thinking on a range of technical problems to make and justify balanced decisions across technical and business parameters
  • Strong technical communication through Technical Writing, Live Presenting and CAD. Familiarity with Siemens NX and Teamcenter would be an advantage for the role
  • Knowledge and experience of product integrity and aerospace certification frameworks
  • Experience with the mechanical design, manufacture, service or integration of high-performance electric machines is a strong advantage.
