Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is looking to add a Mechanical Engineer / Principal Mechanical Engineer– Responsible RE to join our team in Palmdale, CA. The candidate should be a self-starter with familiarity working in an Integrated Product Team construct.

Roles and Responsibilities will include:

• Become the subject matter expert for a specific flight control actuation subsystem.

• Define and champion system improvement initiatives as they become necessary.

• Serve as an engineering representative in the supplier management team for all suppliers providing components of the subsystem, performing system analysis as needed to serve specialty engineering needs, defining and documenting changes and revisions to the subsystem, and providing direct response to subsystem needs as they arise from the user, the customer, and/or program leadership

• Lead mechanical design and detailed development of mechanisms (actuators, deployables, latches, hinges, gear/brake systems), producing drawings, BOMs, tolerance stacks, and manufacturing-ready documentation.

• Own subsystem requirements, perform requirements allocation and traceability, and ensure mechanical solutions meet performance, mass, stiffness, life cycle, and environmental requirements.

• Direct and oversee integration, test, and verification activities for mechanisms and associated assemblies (including EPS and FCAS interfaces): develop test plans, coordinate bench and functional tests, analyze results, and close verification artifacts.

• Perform structural, thermal, kinematic, and motion-control analyses (FEA, fatigue, lubrication, clearance/interference, gear/brake torque) and define design mitigations to ensure reliability and safety.

• Manage supplier technical flow-down, fabrication, and acceptance; resolve manufacturing and assembly issues; lead design reviews and change control as the Responsible Engineer for mechanical interfaces and assemblies.

• Perform various analyses related to their system including, but not limited to: technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability / effectiveness analyses

• Ensure the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that meet technical and schedule requirements.

The selected candidate will be required to work full-time, on-site at our facility. There is no remote / hybrid / telework available for this position. Travel up to 25% may be required.

Basic Qualifications

Mechanical Engineer: Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline and 2 years of related engineering experience; OR a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 0 years of related engineering experience.

Principal Engineer: Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline and 5 years of related engineering experience; OR a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 3 years of related engineering experience; OR a PhD in a STEM discipline and 1 years of related engineering experience.

• Experience with development, design, or sustainment of mechanism systems

• Experience applying Siemens AMESIM, MATLAB/Simulink, or similar analysis tools

• Technical skills in fluid/thermodynamics, pressure systems, structural/thermal analysis (FEA), leak/burst calculations, and system sizing.

• Experience working with flight control actuation systems

• Experience with Siemens NX for part and assembly modeling, draft creation, and engineering release workflows (CAD best practices, PMI, and drawing standards).

• Proficient with typical office toolsets such as Windows OS and Microsoft Office Suite

• Proficient at locating and examining technical data from Computer Aided Design and Product Lifecycle Management tools

• Active U.S.Government Secret Clearance clearance (with a background investigation within the past 5 years or enrolled into Continuous Evaluation).

• Ability to obtain and maintain initial Special Access Program (SAP) access via a Program Access Request (PAR). This SAP/PAR must be obtained prior to commencement of employment and must be obtained within a reasonable amount of time as determined by the company to meet its business needs.

• Ability to obtain and maintain subsequent SAP PARs following commencement of employment to be able to completely support statement of work.

Preferred Qualifications

• Current applicable Special Access Program (SAP) clearance.

• Experience using CATIA V5 to examine 3D models

• Experience with complex mechanism analysis and design

• Experience with structures or subsystem installation design

• Experience presenting technical content to upper management

• Experience using TeamCenter Engineer and Enterprise to locate and examine technical data

Primary Level Salary Range: $91,800.00 - $137,600.00

Secondary Level Salary Range: $114,000.00 - $171,000.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
