As a Mechanical Engineer, you’ll leverage your strong foundation in physics, mathematics, and materials science to process and resolve mechanical problems, design and implement custom mechanical tooling and associated processes, and enable the handling, assembly, and disassembly of parts, components, sub-assemblies, and final assemblies throughout the product life cycle. You'll be responsible for designing, developing, and modifying mechanical engineering layouts, schematics, and specifications. You will oversee manufacturing and installation processes, ensuring adherence to industry standards and regulations-- and you'll coordinate the procurement and assembly of mechanical components and equipment for design projects, identifying sources of critical parts and subsystems to resolve technical issues.

 

 

Job Description

Applied Materials is the leader in materials engineering solutions used to produce virtually every new chip and advanced display in the world. We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our India engineering team. This role is responsible for the design, development, and validation of complex mechanical systems and subsystems used in advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

The ideal candidate will have strong technical depth, hands‑on design experience, and the ability to work cross‑functionally with global teams to deliver high‑quality, manufacturable solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design and development of equipment modules, assemblies, and subsystems from concept through release
  • Perform detailed engineering analysis including stress, thermal, tolerance, and vibration analysis
  • Create and review detailed 3D models, drawings, and documentation using CAD tools
  • Drive design for manufacturability (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), reliability, and cost reduction initiatives
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams including EE, systems engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and vendors
  • Support prototype builds, integration, and qualification testing; troubleshoot complex mechanical issues
  • Participate in design reviews and ensure compliance with Applied Materials standards, safety, and regulatory requirements
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 8–20 years of relevant mechanical design experience in complex systems or precision equipment
  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD tools (Creo, NX or equivalent) and PLM systems (Windchill or Teamcenter)
  • Experience with engineering fundamentals: structural mechanics, materials, GD&T, and manufacturing processes
  • Experience in semiconductor capital equipment, design of subsystems, vacuum systems, wafer handling, robotics, precision motion, facilities, Racks, structural Frames or Electromechanical packaging
  • Strong communication skills with experience working in global, cross‑site teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Knowledge of the Applied Materials product life cycle or Capital equipment industry, including prototyping, material selection and manufacturing methods
