Job Summary: This vacancy is being filled via the Direct-Hire Authority (DHA) for a Mathematical Statistician position located at the U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland. The Census Bureau is accessible from the Metro Rail Green Line - Suitland Station. This Job Opportunity Announcement may be used to fill other Mathematical Statistician, 1529-11/12, FPL GG-12 positions within the Census Bureau in the same geographical location with the same qualifications and specialized experience.

Major Duties:

  • Researches, plans, and implements assigned projects requiring the application of mathematical statistical theory.
  • Plans and conducts project-related studies, which includes preparing specifications and developing new or modifying existing procedures.
  • Develops and applies measures/models to resolve problems.

Qualifications: BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Education Requirement: 1. A Degree that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in the mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics. Courses acceptable toward meeting the mathematics course requirement must have included at least four of the following: differential calculus, integral calculus, advanced calculus, theory of equations, vector analysis, advanced algebra, linear algebra, mathematical logic, differential equations, or any other advanced course in mathematics for which one of these was a prerequisite. Courses in mathematical statistics or probability theory with a prerequisite of elementary calculus or more advanced courses will be accepted toward meeting the mathematics requirements, with the provision that the same course cannot be counted toward both the mathematics and the statistics requirement. OR 2. A combination of education and experience -- courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying known statistical techniques to data such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance. AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Specialized Experience: For the GG-11, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS/GG-09 in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes: building statistical or machine learning models; analyzing data; producing reports on statistical results; AND conducting file verifications or instrument testing. OR Education: 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of specialized experience (less than one year of experience as described above) and directly related graduate education (beyond 2 years of graduate education), that when combined equals 100% of the qualification requirement. Note: Only graduate education in excess of two years (generally 36 semester hours) may be used in this calculation. Specialized Experience: For the GG-12, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS/GG-11 in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes: Building statistical or machine learning models; analyzing data; communicating findings to technical and non-technical audiences; producing reports on statistical results; conducting file verifications or instrument testing; AND writing code for cloud-based environments. OR Education: Education cannot be substituted for experience at the GS/GG-12 grade level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer.
