Masterthesis (d/m/w) #ZEROeAdditive Manufacturing for Hydrogen Aviation Heat Exchangers

Hamburg Area Full time

Job Description:

In order to support Teams Hydrogen Systems Design, Airbus Operations is looking for a

Master’s thesis student (d/f/m), Additive Manufacturing for Hydrogen Aviation Heat Exchangers

You are looking for a master thesis and want to get to know the work of a job title? Then apply now! We look forward to you supporting us in the Hydrogen Systems Design Team as a master’s student (d/f/m)!

  • Location: Hamburg

  • Start: As soon as possible

  • Duration: 6-9 months

Airbus is pioneering the world’s first hydrogen-powered commercial aircraft through the ZEROe programme, where the thermal management of hydrogen is a critical enabler. The hydrogen fuel system requires advanced thermal conditioning to transform cryogenic liquid hydrogen into warm gaseous hydrogen for consumption by the propulsion system.

This internship focuses on the Heaters and Vaporizers equipment group. Specifically, you will investigate how Additive Manufacturing can overcome the limitations of traditional heat exchanger technologies to deliver the next generation of lightweight, compact, and highly integrated cryogenic heat exchangers.

Your location
You will be working at the largest production site for civil aircraft situated in Hamburg. Its location on the southern banks of the river Elbe includes the option to commute by ferry. Experience the special flair of Hamburg in your spare time where vibrant cosmopolitan culture meets nautic legacy.

Your benefits

  • Work-life balance with a 35-hour week (flexitime).

  • International environment with the opportunity to network globally.

  • Work with modern/diversified technologies.

  • At Airbus, we see you as a valuable team member and you are not hired to brew coffee, instead you are in close contact with the interfaces and are part of our weekly team meetings.

  • Opportunity to participate in the Generation Airbus Community to expand your own network.

Your tasks and responsibilities

  • Working within the equipment engineering team, you will contribute to the feasibility study of Additive Manufacturing-based heat exchangers. Your work will include:

  • Research the suitability of advanced alloys for Additive Manufacturing applications interfacing with cryogenic hydrogen.

  • Use simulation tools to design innovative core geometries that maximize heat transfer while optimising pressure drop, mass and volume.

  • Conduct analytical trade-offs comparing Additive Manufacturing designs against configurations in terms of mass, volume, and pressure drop.

  • Identify required investments necessary for aviation-certified Additive Manufacturing production.

  • Identify and propose strategies to mitigate risks associated with the heat exchanger operating with hydrogen (eg coolant freezing, thermal cycling & stresses etc).

Desired skills and qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Thermal Engineering or a related field.

  • Theoretical background in cryogenics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and material sciences.

  • Knowledge of Additive Manufacturing design principles, topology design & optimization tools (e.g. Computational Fluid Dynamics & Finite Element Modeling).

  • A proactive mindset focused on disruptive technology and sustainable aviation.

  • Fluency in English
