What We Want

The Master Utilities Electrician, under direction of a supervisor, as a supervisor (when needed) and working as an individual or in a single craft or multi-craft team is responsible for demonstrating proficiency in the utilization of the knowledge and skills for the installation, maintenance, and servicing of electrical components and systems associated with TAMU utilities operations and campus lighting.  The Master Utilities Electrician is expected to demonstrate effective leadership skills and work effectively with others throughout the university community

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • High school or equivalent combination of education & experience.

  • 7 years of experience as an industrial electrician (working in power, chemical, refinery plants or other heavy industry).

 

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Texas Class C Drivers license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.  Subject to yearly motor vehicle record / driver license checks.  State of Texas Electrical Apprentice license or the ability to obtain one within 3 months of hire.

  

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to read and comprehend written and oral instructions in English and communicate effectively.

  • Demonstratable knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E.

  • Demonstratable knowledge of tools such as phase rotation meter, insulation resistance tester, volt ohm amp meter, and phasing stick.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage priorities. 

  • Effectively utilize Microsoft products such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.

  • Demonstrated understanding of Asset Management Systems such as SAP, Maximo, AiM.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Will be required to complete technical training within one year of hire date, internal candidates must pass technical training before promotion.

  • Must be able to respond to after normal duty hours emergencies and overtime.

Preferred Qualifications

  • State of Texas Journeymans Electrician License (Journeyman Electrician, Journeyman Industrial Electrician, Maintenance Electrician) OR State of Texas Masters Electrician License.

 

Responsibilities

  • Electrical Maintenance- Lead others and/or perform electrical maintenance, installation, testing, troubleshooting and repairs to industrial plant equipment and systems to include, but not limited to: Domestic and Heating Hot Water Boilers, Air Compressors, Industrial and Commercial Chillers, Steam, Combustion turbine and Combustion Engine-driven Power Production Generators, Excitor and voltage regulating systems, Station battery systems, Uninterruptable power systems including battery systems, Campus pedestrian, street and parking lot lighting and the associated wiring, conduit and control systems, Emergency generators and controls.

  • Electric Motors- Lead and/or perform maintenance, installation, testing, troubleshooting and repairs to electric motors to include, but not limited to: Low voltage motors – single phase and 3 phase, Medium voltage motors – 3 phase.

  • Electrical Switchgear- Lead and/or perform maintenance, installation, testing, troubleshooting and repairs to electrical switchgear to include, but not limited to: Low voltage panel boards, motor control centers, substations, variable frequency drives, soft and across-the-line starters. Medium voltage motor control centers, substations, variable frequency drives and soft starters. Protective relay systems.

  • General electrical activities- Lead and/or perform general electrical activities to include, but not limited to: Sizing and installing electrical conduit, EMT, RGS, RA, PVC, Plastibond, seal-tight, etc. Sizing and installing low voltage and medium voltage wire including termination of lower voltage and medium voltage cables and wire. Programming motor protection relays. Thermal imaging of electrical equipment. Performing locates of utilities services. Reading electrical diagrams, schematics and drawings. Research and troubleshoot equipment through reading manuals and other equipment information. Work with programmable logic controllers.

  • Leadership- Trains Utilities Electrician Assistants in the areas of demonstrated proficiency. Daily updates assigned work order status. Attend and participate in weekly team safety meetings. Planning and coordination of work packages that include extensive electrical work and may involve other crafts. Lead work teams at job sites away from direct supervision. Act as supervisor for work group as required. Complete all safety and state required training on time.

 

Physical Requirements:

·         May be required to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds.

·         Must be able to climb stairs and ladders, stand for extended periods of time.

  

Other Requirements and Factors

  • Ability to maintain the security and integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment system or water treatment system

  • This position is security sensitive.

  • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU regulations and procedures. 

  • All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and University safety requirements

  • Works to cover shifts, or take emergency call, on evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
