We also offer the possibility to write your thesis and student projects together with Rolls-Royce.
Key accountabilities:
Additive Manufacturing processes such as Laser Powder Bed Fusion offer the possibility to create very complex and thin-walled structures such as shell-based lattices. The most known lattices are gyroids which belong to the class of triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) structures. The purpose if this master thesis is to perform structural fatigue crack growth (FCG) simulations starting with the simulation of single edge notch tension (SENT) specimen and stepwise increasing the complexity of the analyzed structure. The main tasks consist of:
Reviewing available specimen test programmes to find viable candidates for the simulation of fatigue crack growth.
Setting up finite element models for the simulation.
Performing structural FCG simulations on:
Specimen
Sub-elements
Components
Validating predictions against test results and adjusting model parameters if required.
Support and influence an upcoming research project on lattice structures.
Qualifications:
English or German Language equivalent to CEFR B1 level.
Bachelor in Engineering, preferably Mechanical, Machine Design, Aeronautical, Manufacturing Engineering.
Passion for Additive Manufacturing design and manufacturing
Experience with Finite Element Analysis, Ansys Workbench preferred
Experience in fatigue crack growth and the usage of structural FCG codes
