Job Description Summary

The Marine Maintenance Technician is a highly skilled, multi-systems “jack-of-all-trades” individual responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting a diverse fleet of marine vessels and support equipment. While marine engine knowledge is valuable, this role primarily focuses on the inspection, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of onboard and support systems — including electrical, electronic, HVAC, plumbing, pumping, mechanical, hydraulic, trailer, and auxiliary equipment systems. Under general supervision, this position ensures all vessels and related equipment remain safe, reliable, operationally ready, and well-maintained in appearance and function. Equipment includes, but is not limited to, outboard and inboard vessels, trailers, fleet vehicles, golf carts, pumps, and associated mechanical and electrical systems. This role is ideal for a technician who thrives in a hands-on environment and enjoys solving problems across multiple disciplines rather than specializing solely in engine repair. 

 

Essential Duties/Tasks

Preventative Maintenance

  • Oversee the maintenance aboard outboards and inboards, fleet vehicles, golf carts, trailers, and vessel systems..

  • Maintain and troubleshoot multi-system components, including:

    • Electrical and marine electronic systems

    • Battery systems and charging systems.

    • HVAC and ventilation components

    • Pumps, plumbing, and water transfer systems

    • Hydraulic and mechanical systems

    • Steering and control systems

    • Trailer systems and lighting

  • Researches, recommends to, and assists management to create and improve a preventative maintenance plan for assigned equipment.

  • Performs and documents findings from routine inspections of equipment to ensure that Vessel Operation Safety Management System, federal (United States Coast Guard) and state (Texas Parks and Wildlife) requirements are met.

  • Performs and completes maintenance tasks by scheduled due date to ensure proper operation of equipment. Schedules maintenance around operations ensuring that needed supplies and labor are on hand prior to start of the maintenance.

  • Operates power tools and other equipment necessary to accomplish maintenance assignments.

  • Exercise vessel, systems, and equipment when not in regular use. Ensures operational readiness and maintenance of vessels.

 

Repair Maintenance

  • Enters repair maintenance requests into maintenance tracking software as issues arise or are reported.

  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, electronic, plumbing, HVAC, and auxiliary systems.

  • Perform repairs within the scope of expertise or recommend outsourcing to qualified contractors to minimize downtime.

  • Identify recurring system failures and recommend preventative solutions or system improvements.

  • Conduct post-repair operational testing, including sea trials when necessary, to verify proper system performance.

  • Assist with shipyard projects and oversee contractors performing specialized repairs.

 

Deckhand/Operator/Other

  • Serve as vessel operator when needed, navigating safely and professionally.

  • Act as deckhand when required.

  • Communicate with captains and crew regarding discrepancies and system concerns.

  • Operate fleet vehicles and support equipment as necessary.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • At least one year of hands-on experience in a technical maintenance role (marine, mechanical, facilities, automotive, industrial, or related field).

  • Demonstrated experience working with multiple systems (electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, electronics, pumps, etc.) preferred over engine-only specialization.

 

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) within 90 days

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • US Powerboat Instructors Certification, if needed on the job training can be provided.

  • Experience in marine multi-systems maintenance.

  • Experience with marine electrical and electronic diagnostics.

  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills across multiple equipment systems.

  • Working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and auxiliary systems.

  • Ability to read technical manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams.

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Other Requirements and Factors

  • Operates vehicles as necessary.

  • Responds to emergencies as needed.

  • Operates power tools and other equipment necessary to accomplish maintenance assignments.

  • Ability to work in small or cramped spaces.

  • Ability to lift, push, and pull heavy objects.

  • Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends. Travel required.

  • Must pass a Unites States Coast Guard (USCG)/Department of Transportation (DOT) drug test prior to employment and participate in the University’s random drug testing program.

  • This position is security sensitive.

  • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU policies, regulations, rules and procedures.

  • All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and University safety requirements.
