Manufacturing (Weld) Lab Specialist

We are looking for a Manufacturing Lab Specialist to join our Pittsburgh (Cheswick) location.

As our Manufacturing Lab Specialist, you will prepare materials, and assist as required during welding, sectioning, polishing, and etching cross sections for evaluation of weld procedure qualifications and welder performance qualifications. You will also engage in production welding issues as they arise. Additionally, you will provide support with regards to production welding research and development as well as production welding process improvement.

Your Challenge:

  • Upon receiving written or oral instructions, plan the sequence of operations necessary to develop
    operating parameters and manufacturing procedures for new welding, brazing, or manufacturing
    processes.
  • Perform development functions or feasibility studies which require a high level of skill and judgement
    such as required for joining dissimilar metals, new metals, or metals with unknown welding
    characteristics.
  • Lay out and plan operation details, conduct necessary testing, document data developed, administer
    support, and follow support required by others to assure timely completion of projects.
  • Plan the sequence of operations and direct/or perform the functions necessary to evaluate new
    equipment vital to manufacturing, welding, and brazing. Arrange for and administer the fabrication and
    sectioning of suitable mockups for the equipment evaluation.
  • Advise engineers as to the progress of projects. Discuss and make recommendations based on
    observations and understanding of available manufacturing techniques to continue or alter the scope of
    the project to ensure success.
  • Participate in design reviews to discuss the applicability of developed welding and manufacturing
    techniques in the context of the job at-hand.
  • Set up, test, troubleshoot, and debug (as required) pilot manufacturing and welding equipment in the
    laboratory prior to release for production. Record operating characteristics, observe parameter
    sensitivity, and submit report to responsible engineer.
  • Consider different factors such as electrode selection, voltage, amperage, arc length, electrode position,
    preheat, interpass temperatures, travel speeds, wire feed speed, and gas flow when troubleshooting to
    satisfy design requirements. Record parameters and setup (including sketches) in addition to any other
    pertinent information pertaining to the job.
  • Provide troubleshooting assistance when requested by operations to resolve problems with production
    equipment, processes, or procedures.
  • Participate in root cause analysis investigations and corrective action reports when production issues
    arise.
  • Provide assistance to shop personnel during production welding/brazing/fabrication/etc., as required.
  • Assemble and fabricate components for welding, brazing, manufacturing, or research and development
    from limited engineering information (such as rough sketches or general design concepts).
  • Analyze test results in equipment or process studies.
  • Support field service activities by participating in repairs, mock-ups, and lab preparations.
  • Provide assistance to Manufacturing Laboratory Technician - Class A and Manufacturing Laboratory
    Technician - Class B in field service activities as required.
  • Provide welding guidance to production welders when a Welder Performance Qualification training is
    required per welding code

What You Bring:

  • Due to DoD requirements, candidates must be US citizens.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain DOD security clearance.
  • High school degree plus formal welding training from a vocational or postsecondary institution, or its
    equivalence.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience as a Manufacturing Laboratory Technician – Class A, or its equivalent in
    metal joining or manufacturing facility requiring the same experience.
  • Knowledge of machinery including the following: drill press, lathe, milling machine, hand tools,
    welding and brazing equipment
  • Knowledge of welding and brazing processes, non-destructive testing processes, machining methods, and metallographic processing.
