BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems is currently looking for “dynamic, results driven” individual to join as Manufacturing & Cost Reduction Engineer at our production plant in Viana, Portugal.

Key Responsibilities

Value Engineering & Business Case Ownership

  • Leads VA/VE initiatives from opportunity identification through industrial implementation.
  • Builds and owns technical and financial business cases, including cost–benefit analysis, risk assessment, and implementation roadmap.
  • Defines value targets aligned with product cost, margin, and competitive objectives.

Product & Process Value Optimization

  • Identifies alternative design concepts, materials, process flows, and component architectures that improve value without compromising functionality, quality, or reliability.
  • Acts as a technical challenger to existing solutions, promoting simplification, standardization, and modularization.
  • Supports early-phase design decisions by providing value-driven technical recommendations.

Cross‑Functional & Supplier Collaboration

  • Works closely with Product Engineering to evaluate and validate technical changes required for value initiatives.
  • Interfaces with Purchasing and Suppliers to explore alternative technologies, components, and sourcing strategies.
  • Coordinates validation activities with Manufacturing, Quality, and Test teams to ensure feasibility and robustness of proposed solutions.

Validation & Industrial Readiness

  • Leads or supports technical validation of VA/VE solutions, including prototype builds, testing, and process trials.
  • Ensures readiness for industrial deployment by aligning technical changes with documentation, control plans, and quality standards.
  • Supports investment planning and justification related to implementation of value initiatives.

Structured Problem Solving & Risk Management

  • Applies structured problem‑solving methodologies (e.g., 8D, PDCA, 5‑Why, FMEA) to mitigate technical and industrial risks.
  • Ensures lessons learned from validation and production feedback are captured and reused across projects.

Portfolio & Performance Tracking

  • Maintains transparency of VA/VE pipeline, implementation status, and realized savings.
  • Tracks performance against committed value targets and supports reporting to management.

Requirements & Competencies

Education & Experience

  • Engineering degree in Mechanical, Mechatronic, Industrial, or similar discipline.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in engineering roles related to product development, industrial engineering, or technical project leadership.

Technical & Analytical Skills

  • Strong capability in cost breakdown analysis, BOM analysis, and value driver identification.
  • Solid understanding of manufacturing processes and industrial constraints.
  • Proficiency in Excel and engineering tools (e.g., CAD, GD&T, planning or costing tools).

Behavioral & Leadership Skills

  • Strong analytical and critical‑thinking mindset with the ability to challenge the status quo.
  • Result‑oriented and comfortable working with targets and financial commitments.
  • Effective cross‑functional communicator with the ability to influence without direct authority.
  • Able to manage complexity, priorities, and parallel initiatives.
