Our continued commitment to helping Britain prosper means that as a colleague you can make a difference to customers, businesses and communities.

Job Description

As Managing Director within FI Credit, you'll play a critical senior leadership role supporting the FI Credit function in the oversight, governance, and strategic direction of the broader FI portfolio.

You'll act as a primary sanctioner across all FI sectors, providing independent credit judgement, balanced challenge, and timely decision-making across a diverse and complex set of exposures including Banks, Insurance, Asset Managers & Wealth, Financial Sponsors, Fund Finance, Hedge Funds, Securitisation, Specialist Finance, Sovereigns and Counterparty Credit Risk.

Alongside sanctioning responsibility, you'll help shape the strategic direction of the function — supporting portfolio resilience, process efficiency, talent development, and strong partnership with Coverage and Product teams.

This role sits alongside the FI Credit Sector Heads as part of the senior FI Credit leadership team. While Sector Heads lead vertical portfolio strategies and sector underwriting, this position provides horizontal sanctioning authority, cross-portfolio risk oversight, and platform leadership. The role is designed to strengthen enterprise credit governance, ensure consistency of decision-making, and support the continued scaling of the FI Credit platform.

What You’ll Do

  • Act as a senior sanctioner across all FI Credit sectors, exercising delegated credit authority on new transactions, renewals, amendments, and complex restructurings.
  • Provide independent judgement and constructive challenge to business partners to support sustainable growth and sound risk-taking.
  • Support the setting and execution of portfolio strategy, risk appetite, and sector priorities.
  • Help design and deliver credit policies, frameworks, and governance processes that are consistent, scalable, and forward-looking.
  • Lead or support portfolio reviews, thematic risk deep dives, and emerging risk assessments.
  • Play a central role in complex transaction structuring discussions across lending, traded products/derivatives, and structured finance exposures.
  • Represent FI Credit in senior governance forums, committees, and risk discussions.

Strategic & Platform Leadership

We're looking for a senior leader who can help elevate the FI Credit platform holistically:

  • Help streamline and simplify credit processes to improve speed, clarity, and governance.
  • Identify opportunities to automate, digitise, and enhance portfolio monitoring.
  • Support the development of consistent underwriting and sanctioning standards across sectors.
  • Partner with collaborators including Risk, Finance, Legal, and Business leadership to ensure the portfolio evolves in line with market and regulatory expectations.
  • Contribute to long-term strategic planning for FI Credit, including sector positioning and resource allocation.

People Leadership & Culture

You'll play an important leadership role in developing our talent and culture:

  • Coach and mentor Credit Officers and emerging leaders across the FI platform.
  • Support structured training, upskilling, and capability building.
  • Promote a culture of constructive challenge, collaboration, and intellectual curiosity.
  • Encourage cross-sector learning and knowledge sharing.
  • Act as a role model for inclusive leadership, empowerment, and professional development.

Partnership & Stakeholder Engagement

We're looking for a trusted business partner who:

  • Builds strong, credible relationships with Coverage and Product partners.
  • Works collaboratively to resolve complex credit issues.
  • Supports sustainable client relationships while maintaining risk discipline.
  • Engages effectively with senior collaborators across the bank.

Governance & Authority

  • You'll hold significant delegated credit authority.
  • You'll act as a Material Risk Taker (MRT).
  • You'll support regulatory engagement, internal audit reviews, and risk governance processes as required.

Experience & Capabilities

We're looking for a senior credit leader with:

  • Extensive experience across Financial Institutions Credit, ideally spanning multiple FI sectors. Experience in Corporate credit is a plus.
  • A strong track record as a credit sanctioner with material delegated authority.
  • Experience leading complex credit discussions across lending, traded products & structured transactions, and their respective documentation.
  • Proven ability to operate at senior governance and committee levels.
  • Experience engaging with regulators and internal control functions.
  • Strong strategic thinking and portfolio management capability.
  • Experience helping design or enhance credit frameworks, policies, or processes.
  • Passion for simplification, automation, and operational excellence.
  • A genuine commitment to coaching, mentoring, and developing people.
  • Excellent communication skills — clear, concise, and balanced.
  • Collaborative approach with strong stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Confidence to challenge constructively while enabling commercial outcomes.

We also offer a wide-ranging benefits package, which includes:

  • A generous pension contribution of up to 15%
  • An annual discretionary performance-related bonus
  • Share schemes including free shares!
  • Benefits you can adapt to your lifestyle, such as discounted shopping.
  • 30 days’ holiday, with bank holidays on top
  • A range of wellbeing initiatives and generous parental leave policies
