Managing Director, Alternative Asset Allocations

The Managing Director, Alternative Assets Allocation, will play a critical role in supporting the strategic management and governance of the company’s multi-billion-dollar Alternative Assets portfolio.  This role supports the Head of Alternative Assets by generating investment strategies, managing partnerships, conducting due diligence, recommending portfolio actions, and helping oversee the portfolio to meet investment goals.    The individual in this role will collaborate with their CIO counterparts in Fixed Income and Investment Strategy to explore areas of growth for Guardian’s general account This role requires a strong understanding of alternative assets and insurance company portfolio construction and a willingness to be a thought leader. 

 

Key Responsibilities  

  • Support the Head of Alternatives in sourcing and identifying new alternative investment opportunities, contributing to the expansion and enhancement of current portfolios.   

  • Monitor performance metrics across all alternatives strategies and perform regular portfolio reviews with our strategic partners to ensure compliance with investment guidelines, strategic asset allocations, and regulatory constraints.  

  • Work with other members of the CIO to develop and refined investment strategies best aligned with Guardian’s financial goals.   

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including Risk, Finance, Corporate Strategy, and Operations, to support enterprise-wide initiatives. 

  • Prepare and deliver regular reports to senior management as needed. 

  • Contribute to the development and refinement of investment strategies aligned with insurance liabilities and enterprise risk appetite.  

  • Identify and recommend improvements in investment processes, oversight tools, and reporting capabilities.  

  • Collaborate with investment operations, technology, and data teams to improve transparency, efficiency, and automation.  

 

 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, business, or related field; MBA, CFA, or progress toward CFA is strongly preferred.  

  • 10+ years of investment experience in alternatives assets (e.g., private equity, private credit, real estate, hedge funds, infrastructure, etc.) investment management, ideally within an insurance company, asset manager, or consulting environment. 

  • Experience in portfolio construction, external asset manager research and selection, leading due diligence, and investment monitoring, benchmarking, and reporting.  

  • Strong understanding of global capital markets with an understanding of foreign markets. 

  • Familiarity with regulatory and accounting frameworks for insurance portfolios (e.g., NAIC, GAAP, and statutory accounting).  

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to present complex concepts and ideas to senior leaders and build effective working relationships across both internal teams and external partners. 

  • Strategic thinker with strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
