Managing Counsel, AI and Technology Legal 

The Managing Counsel, Technology Legal leads a high performing team delivering strategic, commercially focused legal advice across technology contracting, data governance and cyber matters. 

The role plays a critical leadership position within Legal & Group Secretariat, shaping how legal risk is identified, managed and enabled across the Group’s technology and data agenda, while building strong capability, culture and engagement within the team.

The AI and Technology Legal team provides high value strategic advice to our internal clients to support and enhance CBA’s purpose and success In addition to supporting the Group’s competitive advantage in technology, business success and market value, the team works with a range of teams across CBA that require strategic and enabling legal advice with a span across the entire organisation.   

Do work that matters 

We are looking for a senior technology lawyer with extensive experience supporting the implementation of technology strategies involving complex technology, data, privacy and cyber security issues who enjoys a dynamic environment and brings curiosity and humility.    

You will provide practical legal advice and be a strong and effective communicator, capable of working closely with a range of senior stakeholders across a diverse practice, both autonomously and alongside other lawyers. 

You will lead a team of lawyers within the AI and Technology Legal who are highly skilled and collegiate who enjoy the benefits of working in house close to the commercial side of transactions with some of the highest quality and most challenging legal work in the industry  

On any given day, you will: 

  • Provide strategic legal advice on complex technology initiatives, including engagement of technology vendors, outsourcing, cloud, software platforms and emerging technology partnerships.  

  • Advise on legal, governance and regulatory issues relating to data protection, privacy, information security, resilience and cyber security in a financial services context.  

  • Support major Group initiatives including M&A transactions, partnerships and joint ventures, with a focus on data separation, access, use and technology integration.  

  • Oversee intellectual property, sponsorship and marketing matters connected to technology enabled initiatives.  

  • Support continuous improvement in the legal aspects of the Group’s practices, procedures and policies in Cyber Security, Privacy and Supplier Lifecycle, particularly as they intersect with APRA CPS 230, APRA CPS 900 and other regulatory standards and expectations 

  • Instruct and manage external legal advisers on complex or specialist technology, data or cyber matters.  

  • Partner closely with risk, compliance, technology, data, procurement and business teams to proactively identify, manage and mitigate legal risk.  

  • Coach, mentor and develop the team, and drive continuous improvement in service delivery through playbooks, templates and process optimisation. 

 

We’re interested in hearing from people who have 

  • Tertiary qualifications in Law and admitted to practice in NSW or another State or Territory. 

  • Proven people leadership experience, including leading and developing high performing legal teams.  

  • Deep experience as a senior lawyer in the financial services or other regulated industry, with strong exposure to technology, data or digital matters. 

  • Sound commercial and financial acumen and curiosity in commercial drivers and issues for transactions and partnerships. 

  • Excellent technical legal skills including the ability to quickly grasp and resolve issues in complex matters and a willingness to continue to grow and expand your expertise. 

  • Deep curiosity about emerging legal risks and issues in technology, data protection, operational risk, critical infrastructure, privacy and cyber security. 

  • The capacity to build excellent relationships with a range of stakeholders and the ability to clearly communicate complex issues with simple and persuasive advice. 

  • Experience managing complex, novel or high-risk legal matters and engaging with senior stakeholders.  

  • An inquisitive mindset with a bias to action, focused on enabling innovation while managing risk.  

  • Excellent organisational, communication and stakeholder management skills.
