Job Description:

The Data Science Manager helps lead the department’s provision of analytical expertise in support of our organization’s clinical operations, financial performance, and population health and to address health service problems with innovative data-driven solutions.  They lead and empower their teams to extract valuable insights from data, solve complex business problems, and drive data-driven decision making across the organization.  They bridge the gap between technical expertise and business needs, ensuring projects deliver impactful results.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Management and leadership

  • Collaborate in creation of a high-spirited working environment that fosters learning, collaboration, respect, and positive morale.

  • Participate in development and implementation of departmental goals and initiatives.

  • Prioritize projects, allocate staff to ensure balanced workloads, monitor progress, communicate updates, and adapt as needed, consistent with departmental and organizational goals.

  • Participate in recruitment, selection, on-boarding, training, and professional growth of staff, serving as role model and mentor to promote professionalism.

  • Define performance expectations and hold subordinates accountable; ensure adherence to organizational policies; conduct performance assessments to facilitate achievement of individual and organizational goals.

  • Participate in preparation and monitoring of the departmental budget.

Expertise in Action

  • Provide analytical support for strategic management efforts and initiatives that may impact the clinical quality and financial performance of the physician network.

  • Guide staff in appropriate analytical study design and identification of decision alternatives through the proper framing of customers’ questions, compilation and cleaning of data, model building, validation, and interpretation of results, all consistent with professional standards.

  • Design analytic plans and lead evaluations of clinical impact and ROI of quality improvement and utilization interventions.

  • Lead development, validation, and maintenance of internally-built or vendor provided machine learning algorithms with quality control checks to improve upon care delivery programs 

  • Create complex models utilizing large databases for analysis and forecasting and synthesize results in support of organizational decision-making. 

  • Work with advanced graphic tools, including dashboards and other visual displays, to provide clear and insightful views of organizational performance.

  • Participate in efforts to establish and maintain equitable and fiscally responsible provider compensation strategies that are aligned with organizational goals.

  • Provide consultation to internal stakeholders in understanding and responding to HPMG performance as measured by external bodies, e.g., health plans and the Integrated Healthcare Association, as well as variations in internal clinical and financial metrics.

  • Maintain expertise in clinical and financial performance metrics; stay abreast of industry trends and share best practices within and beyond the department.

  • Identify tools or processes that improve team efficiency and effectiveness, and oversee their integration into workflows.

Collaboration

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams in developing and deploying reporting tools to meet the broad spectrum of analytical needs across our delivery system.

  • Promote and implement improvements to workflow procedures and/or system configuration modifications.

  • Facilitate integration of population health analytics into medical management and quality improvement programs; optimize recurring reporting processes to inform existing and emerging care delivery systems; develop processes and reports that can be turned over to end-users’ control whenever possible.

  • Teach internal and external stakeholders about appropriate use of standardized reports, analytical approaches to population management and business problems, and program evaluation.

  • Participate in and improve the organization’s quality assurance procedures.

  • Provide analytical support and expertise to multiple committees and workgroups of Hill Physicians and partner organizations working to understand their needs and translate them into actionable data science solutions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • Master’s degree in healthcare, informatics, statistics, public health, or related field with coursework in quantitative analysis or 3 years professional analytics-related experience.

  • A minimum of 3-5 years managerial experience and 5 years of experience in healthcare analytics.

  • Experience in managing projects, developing recommendations with appropriate levels of supporting analysis, and participating in senior leadership discussions.

  • Ability to identify key business issues and contribute to strategic and tactical plans.

  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate consensus across functional, departmental and organizational boundaries, to relate to diverse communities, to integrate diverse perspectives, and to promote a positive workplace culture.

  • Working knowledge of contractual, administrative, and operational issues related to managed care organizations and physician groups.

  • Proficiency in the creation of complex analytical models, trend analysis, report design and development.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and to function as an integral part of a team in a rapidly changing work environment, frequently operating without direct supervision.

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment, prioritize multiple projects and problem-solve under tight deadlines and resource constraints.

  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills and presentation skills, including ability to present complex technical concepts in a clear, concise manner to audiences with varying levels of technical understanding.

  • Proficiency in analyzing a wide array of data types and sources (medical and pharmacy claims, clinical process and outcome data, risk scoring tools, social determinants of health)

  • Proficiency in querying languages such as SQL to write and execute complex queries

  • Experience with advanced analytic programs/languages such as SAS or R

  • Experience with advanced data visualization tools and techniques such as Tableau, PowerBI or GIS software (ArcGIS)

  • Knowledge of various study design and implementation strategies

  • Knowledge of EPIC electronic health records data structures

  • Experience with machine learning techniques

Additional Information:

Salary: $134,000 - $179,000 Annual
