Job Summary:

The Manager, Physician Budget & Compensation is responsible for the financial activity related physician compensation for St. Elizabeth Physicians. This position works with the System Director/AVP, SEP Finance, SEP administrative and clinical leaders to ensure the methodologies used to reward performance of the physician group are in alignment with the overall strategic objectives of the organization and meets all Federal legal requirements. Collaborates with the Financial Shared Services group to ensure physician and advanced practitioners’ compensation are accurately recorded in the financial statements, business plans, quarterly forecasting, long range financial plans and budgets of the organization. Provides compensation statements to physicians and advanced practitioners on a regular basis.

Job Description:

Physician Compensation Plan and Development

  • Timely and accurate calculations and transmission of monthly Physician and Advanced Practitioner compensation to payroll and the month end accruals for physicians & APP compensation and associated payroll taxes.
  • Timely and accurate reporting and distribution of provider compensation statements.
  • Model various physician compensation scenarios.
  • Manage the IHS compensation audit for benchmarking of SEP physician compensation.
  • Develop and maintain standardized, consistent and streamlined processes to increase efficiency and accuracy in all areas of physician compensation and reporting.
  • Manage the timely and accurate payouts of monthly draws, quarterly settlements and annual P4P.
  • Assist providers with their compensation questions/issues.
  • Anticipate provider compensation issues and report to the System Director/AVP, SEP Finance with suggested resolutions(s).
  • Provide ad hoc reports that are accurate and timely as requested by administration.

Accounting, Budgeting and Financial Reporting

  • Reconcile the monthly accruals (compensation and PR taxes) before uploading into payroll ERP (i.e., Workday).
  • Assists Finance Operations/Budgeting team to ensure Physician and Advanced Practitioner projections and budgets are accurate.
  • Review the reconciliation of the Balance Sheet accounts used for the accruals of provider compensation and payroll related taxes.
  • Work in partnership with the Accounting group to ensure the pass-through payroll accounts are balanced and recorded appropriately.
  • Review the Balance Sheet reconciliation for the pass-through account with the accounting group.

Personnel Management and Development

  • Train, develop, coach, counsel and assign duties and work schedules.
  • Evaluate job performance and review performance appraisal with personnel, providing valuable feedback that assists both the organization and the individual.
  • Initiate or recommend necessary counseling, disciplinary actions, termination and commendatory actions.
  • Monitors associate satisfaction and keeps leadership informed of potential issues.
  • Reward and recognize associates.

Budget/Finance Management

  • Contributes to the positive overall financial performance of the organization.
  • With the assistance of the Director, controls, maintains, monitors and administers annual budgets (operating and capital) to ensure the department goals are met.
  • Provide variance analysis of any meaningful positive or negative variation on a monthly basis or more frequently, as needed.
  • Seek innovative ways to reduce/contain costs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education, Credentials, Licenses:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field

Specialized Knowledge: 

  • Healthcare Finance specific to multi-specialty physician groups, managed care contracting, compliance, anti-trust laws, Medicare fraud and abuse laws
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Knowledge and use of MS Office suite products (Excel, Work, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access)
  • Effective organizational skills and work professionally with doctors, hospital administrators and management, associates and the public
  • Effective leadership skills
  • Effective interpersonal, facilitation and motivational skills
  • Extensive experience in Access and Excel (i.e., Macros/VBA, pivot tables, complex embedded formulas, etc.)
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills with the ability to conceptualize and effectively apply ideals and information.

  • 5 years’ experience in a multi-specialty physician group and/or integrated healthcare system
