The Manager of Emergency Communications and Issues Response reports to the Director of Communications of Generation and Emergency Response, with responsibility for creating tools, processes, and strategies to facilitate generation emergency communications and issue management across the enterprise.
This role requires extensive experience in communications, demands attention to detail and demonstrated ability to collaborate within a matrixed organization to formulate emergency response communication strategies and messaging. The position also involves executing complex emergency response and issue-specific drills throughout the enterprise.
As part of the Corporate Affairs team, this role is responsible for cultivating constructive relationships with external stakeholders, such as state and county officials, local emergency response organizations, and industry partners. The position requires the capacity to operate both independently and collaboratively within a team setting, engage directly with senior leadership, collaborating with executive leaders on communications as appropriate, and effectively managing high-pressure situations while adapting promptly to shifting priorities.
Serves as part of the company’s crisis communications team, assessing and mitigating risks that may impact the company’s reputation.
Participates in on-call emergency duty rotation.
Works with internal clients to conceptualize emergency preparedness strategies and develops support materials to facilitate potential response.
Maintains the Corporate JIC and associated processes, procedures and materials associated with emergency response, in a state of readiness.
Organizes and supports media staging areas, including field locations and alternative media centers as required, through collaboration with Corp. Comm. leadership and company operational personnel.
Facilitates comprehensive emergency planning across the enterprise, manages logistics for drills and tabletop exercises, identifies gaps and opportunities for enhancement, and coordinates action plans to ensure ongoing improvement.
Coordinates training for emergency response rolls within Corporate Affairs, including annual assessment of roles and responsibilities, and updating training materials in coordination with Corporate Communication leadership and business unit leaders.
Fosters relationships with State and County emergency management teams and emergency response organizations in jurisdictions Duke Energy serves; serving on emergency planning task forces and committees to support collaboration with community stakeholders.
Works in collaboration with other Corporate Communication SMEs to identify emerging issues and develop communications plans to address issues and avoid potential adverse impacts to the company.
Conducts benchmark studies with industry peers to assess opportunities for enhancing the company’s emergency response strategies and implements improvement plans as needed.
Manages emergency preparedness information and messaging for internal and external use on shared platforms, including the Web, Portal, and dark sites.
Collaborates with subject matter experts within Corporate Communications on media inquiries related to emergency response and issues management.
Basic/Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, or a related field (such as marketing or public relations)
Minimum of Six (6) years of experience in communications, public affairs, journalism, emergency planning, or a related field
8-10 years of experience in corporate communications
Experience in creating complex strategic communications plans designed to help leaders and clients achieve their business objectives
Executive communications support within a matrix organization
Experience in providing strategic counsel to executives and business unit leaders
Excellent relationship management skills and ability to manage/integrate with multiple stakeholders inside and outside of the company
Highly flexible, adaptable and detail oriented.
Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and prioritize tasks
Excellent collaboration skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Knowledge of emergency management principles and practices
Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills
Experience in electric utility industry or other highly regulated, high-profile industry
Experience in leading complex, high-profile communications projects
Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility
