We are looking for you to join our team as a Mechanical Design Engineering Manager Level 3 based out of Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, PA. What you’ll get to do:

The Mechanical Design Engineering Manager 3 is responsible for providing functional leadership and direction of engineering execution teams based in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, PA, Annapolis, MD and in Sunnyvale, CA.  The teams consists of a staff of approximately 21 design, test, and systems engineers.  Responsibilities include leading this geographically diverse team of engineers in the areas of design and development, and production support for machinery including propulsion motors, propulsor bearings, and couplings for Naval Propulsion and Power Generation.  The job also includes management of time keeping, performance reviews, staffing and resource planning, training, and team engagement for the team.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing project and technical oversight of design activities performed by the teams

  • Preparing cost estimates, provide proposal inputs, and review proposal content for both internal and external customers

  • Regularly presenting technical topics to both internal and external customers

  • Increasing mechanical design and production support engineering competencies through employee development and strategic hiring

  • Balancing employee needs with business goals

  • Providing ownership of and direction to the design and production support processes used by the team

  • Supporting department initiatives, forecasting and recruiting, technology roadmap creation, and champion continuous process improvements

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) discipline with 8 years of engineering experience; OR a Master's Degree in a STEM discipline with 6 years of engineering experience; OR a PhD in a STEM discipline with 3 years of engineering experience.   

  • US Citizenship required

  • Ability to obtain and maintain DoD Secret clearance

  • Strong fundamentals in Design Engineering for Rotating Machinery

  • Ability to provide technical communication and coordination with senior leadership

  • Proven track record of managing direct reports of various levels and disciplines

  • Production issues resolution experience

  • Basic understanding of the Design, Manufacturing and Test Integration process

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) discipline (preferred Mechanical Engineering).

  • Experience as a Technical Lead, Project Manager, or other demonstrated leadership role related to program execution

  • Understanding of machinery design and production engineering principles

  • Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), requirements development, or technical project management experience preferred

  • Understanding and knowledge of Agile (SCRUM) techniques and activities

  • Knowledge of Design Engineering processes, procedures and work instructions required to support both management and engineering tasks

  • Experience with proposals and Earned Value

Primary Level Salary Range: $175,400.00 - $263,200.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
