Job Description
Role Summary
The Manager, Legal Systems Strategy & Operations is responsible for end-to-end ownership of key legal technology platforms (including iManage, Anaqua, and TAP), ensuring they are stable, integrated, and continuously evolving to meet the needs of the Law & Policy organization.
Building on the existing iManage and GPAS operations manager role, this position expands the scope to lead cloud migrations, system integrations, workflow automation, and overall systems strategy and management for Legal.
The ideal candidate has deep experience configuring and operating enterprise legal systems, strong technical aptitude around integrations and automation, and the ability to partner with Legal, IT, and vendor teams to drive a scalable, modern, AI-enabled legal technology ecosystem that supports advanced analytics, automation, and decision-making across the Law & Policy organization.
Key Responsibilities
Platform Ownership & Operations
- Serve as the primary owner for iManage, GPAS, TAP, and adjacent legal technology platforms, overseeing day-to-day operations, performance, and user experience.
- Manage system configuration, administration, and monitoring to ensure high availability, reliability, and security.
- Coordinate and prioritize enhancement requests, defect remediation, and releases in partnership with IT and vendors.
Cloud Migrations & Modernization
- Lead cloud migration initiatives for legal technology platforms (e.g., legacy on-prem to SaaS or cloud-hosted solutions), including planning, testing, cutover, and stabilization.
- Define migration strategies that minimize business disruption while improving performance, scalability, and supportability.
- Partner with enterprise architecture, infrastructure, and cybersecurity teams to ensure cloud solutions meet GM standards and compliance requirements.
System Integrations & Data Flows
- Design and oversee integrations between legal systems (e.g., matter management, document management, HR, finance, identity, and records systems), working closely with integration and systems engineering teams.
- Ensure data quality, integrity, and reconciliations across systems; define and document data contracts, mappings, and error-handling processes.
- Collaborate with technical teams to troubleshoot and resolve integration issues, incidents, and performance bottlenecks.
- Support critical legal analytics across platforms, with an emphasis on accuracy, consistent and timely delivery, and curated data for improved quality.
Workflow Automation & Process Optimization
- Identify opportunities to automate legal workflows (e.g., intake, approvals, document routing, notifications, reporting) using existing platforms, low-code tools, and integration capabilities.
- Partner with Legal process owners to understand pain points, design future-state workflows, and translate them into robust, maintainable technical solutions.
- Establish standards, templates, and governance for workflow design to ensure consistency, scalability, and reusability.
Systems Strategy, Roadmap & Governance
- Develop and maintain a multi-year roadmap for legal technology platforms, aligned with Legal and enterprise IT strategies.
- Provide thought leadership on platform consolidation, decommissioning, and modernization to reduce technical debt and total cost of ownership.
- Contribute to governance forums (e.g., design reviews, change advisory boards) to ensure changes are well-controlled and documented.
- Promote an AI-first approach to legal technology strategy, ensuring platforms, integrations, and data structures are designed to enable advanced analytics, automation, and generative AI use cases for Legal.
Stakeholder Management & Change Enablement
- Act as a trusted partner to Legal leadership, practice groups, and operations teams to understand needs and translate them into prioritized initiatives.
- Lead change management activities for new features, releases, and migrations, including communications, training, and user adoption strategies.
- Represent Legal in cross-functional initiatives involving shared platforms or enterprise services.
Risk, Compliance & Incident Management
- Ensure legal systems adhere to data privacy, records management, information security, and regulatory requirements in partnership with compliance and IT.
- Oversee incident response and problem management for legal platforms, driving root-cause analysis and long-term fixes.
- Maintain strong documentation (runbooks, configuration records, architecture diagrams, and standard operating procedures).
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience with enterprise systems administration or configuration, ideally within legal, compliance, or adjacent corporate functions.
- Demonstrated experience configuring and supporting legal or knowledge management platforms such as document management (e.g., iManage), matter or case management, or workflow systems.
- Proven experience with system integrations (APIs, middleware, ETL, or similar) and working with integration / systems engineering teams.
- Hands-on experience supporting or delivering cloud-based SaaS platforms or cloud migrations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including incident triage, root cause analysis, and performance tuning.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate between technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred / Ideal Qualifications
- Experience as a Senior Systems Configurator or Systems Engineer in a complex, global environment.
- Demonstrated work on legal platforms and integrations, including troubleshooting jobs, managing scheduled processes, and supporting SaaS or hybrid deployments.
- Familiarity with legal operations processes (e.g., matter lifecycle, document management, discovery, compliance workflows).
- Experience with workflow automation tools, job schedulers, or orchestration platforms.
- Exposure to incident and change management practices (e.g., ITIL), including participation in on-call or priority incident response.
Core Competencies
- Systems Thinking: Ability to understand and design end-to-end ecosystems (applications, integrations, data, and process).
- Execution & Ownership: Comfortable owning platforms and roadmaps from concept through delivery and operations.
- Collaboration: Proven success working across Legal, IT, vendors, and global stakeholders.
- Change Leadership: Skilled at driving adoption of new tools and processes through clear communication and training.
- Continuous Improvement: Bias toward simplification, automation, and measurable improvements in user experience and efficiency.
