Manager - Global Technical Accounting

Job Description

The Global Technical Accounting team (GTA) supports the Corporate Controller through several functional areas including Technical Accounting Analysis, New Standards, and Mergers & Acquisitions. You will have an excellent opportunity to build on technical accounting knowledge and problem-solving skills, gain exposure to complex global business and accounting issues, and will work with senior leadership within the organization and across the international regions. The role provides many opportunities to enhance and develop a strong foundational knowledge of accounting across a broad spectrum of topics and issues,
resulting in a well-rounded technical accounting experience that is highly valued in other areas of Corporate Controllership and Finance.

The successful manager has a solid foundation of accounting knowledge, strong executive presence, and an eagerness to learn. If you are a self-starter who takes initiative, can manage multiple projects through to
completion, and have strong written and oral communication abilities, this is a great opportunity to leverage your skills.


You may be assigned a variety of responsibilities depending on experience and interest. The following represents an overview of some of the responsibilities.


Technical Accounting Analysis and Complex Contract Reviews

Responsible for the completion of technical accounting analysis and accounting concurrence memos, working closely with the business/regions in:

  • Revenue recognition
  • Long-lived asset impairments and exit costs obligations
  • Variable Interest Entities, and consolidation
  • Lease accounting, including embedded leases
  • Research and development arrangements and other joint ventures
  • Securitizations
  • Derivatives – Embedded/NPNS


New Standards

  • Monitor and report FASB activities to identify changes in existing guidance that will have an impact on GM’s financial statements
  • Participate in FASB outreach, industry groups, and Big 4 roundtable activities; facilitate process for correspondence with the FASB through Comment Letter submission
  • Research, interpret, and document all new accounting standards and how each applies to GM as well as comply with external 10-Q/10-K reporting requirements
  • Partner with regions in the implementation of new accounting standards
  • Team with Accounting Policy to ensure changes in GAAP are appropriately reflected in GM’s Accounting Policy Manual

Mergers & Acquisitions

  • Participate in M&A and other business development activities and identifying accounting issues with a global viewpoint and a focus on risk Provide or manage accounting due diligence
  • Provide or manage transaction technical accounting & application analysis
  • Manage or assist in operational accounting integration
  • Function as a valuable communication link for M&A activities
  • Develop or coordinate transaction impact assessments from a financial statement standpoint

Basic Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree with major in accounting, business administration correlated field
  • CPA or CA required with at least 7-8 years of public accounting experience or equivalent industry experience in accounting, national practice experience a plus
  • Foundational knowledge of US GAAP
  • Experience researching, concluding and documenting accounting issues
  • Demonstrated ability dealing with complex transactions
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines
  • Ownership of assigned areas of responsibilities
  • Problem solving and analytical abilities
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated commitment to teamwork and partnerships
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to network and collaborate cross-functionally
  • Ability to embrace and manage change
  • Demonstrated leadership skills working with a global team and senior leadership regarding complex accounting, reporting, process, and control issues
     

Location: Hybrid. This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the Detroit Renaissance Ctr - Global HQ Detroit Mi three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business]
