Job Description:
Canadian Finance’s Expense Management team is a high-performing group, who are key business partners providing financial advice and support to Canada’s Business Units, Enablement Functions, Technology and Corporate teams. This team is accountable for Canada’s expense planning, budgeting, forecasting, reporting and analysis to drive expense management across Sun Life Canada and support strategic decisions.
Reporting to the Director, Expense Management, this role is accountable for end-to-end expense management for Business Group Capital (BGC) and Canada Central Functions, including leading annual planning and budgeting, monthly/quarterly expense reporting, forecasting and chargebacks. This role is also collaborating with partners to address expense queries and provide value-added financial advice.
The Manager will play a leadership role in driving a disciplined, efficient, and scalable reporting and planning process, while enhancing transparency, insights, and decision support for senior leadership. In addition, this role will also support the transformation of expense management in Canada through evolving reporting, elevating relevant insights and developing new frameworks, metrics and dashboards.
Through extensive involvement with Canada’s Business Units, Enablement Functions, Technology and Corporate teams, the individual will develop a broad knowledge of all areas, financial and business drivers, and key performance indicators within Sun Life Canada. This position is also responsible for fostering and building a positive, engaging and inclusive team environment, that proactively anticipates business needs and recommends new opportunities and/or enhancements.
What will you do?
Lead end-to-end expense management for BGC and Canada Central Functions, ensuring accuracy, completeness and timeliness of results
Own month-end and quarter-end reporting and forecasting, delivering clear, concise and executive-level insights
Perform value-added variance analysis to identify key drivers, trends, risks, and opportunities, with actionable recommendations
Lead annual budgeting and planning processes, including coordination of inputs, reviewing and alignment with business partners and stakeholders
Building and maintaining strong partnerships with business leaders, providing financial advice, challenge, and decision support
Manage cost allocation processes to Business units and Enablement Functions, ensuring transparency and accuracy
Manage BGC expenses and BGC-funded initiatives, including tracking spend and benefits and ensuring alignment with approved fundings
Identify and implement process improvements and automation opportunities to enhance efficiency
We are looking for someone with:
Accounting designation (CPA/CMA/CA/CGA)
Proven experience in financial planning, budgeting and reporting within a complex organization
Strong analytical skills with deep understanding of expense drivers and unit costs
Excellent business partnering and stakeholder influence skills
Demonstrated ability to manage ambiguity and drive alignment across multiple teams
Superior written and verbal communication skills; ability to translate complex concepts into clear executive messaging
Results-oriented self-starter with high ownership and sense of urgency; able to work with minimal supervision
Strong attention to detail and commitment to continuous improvement
Preferred skills:
5+ years of Insurance and/or Financial Industry experience with direct experience in financial planning, budgeting, reporting, forecasting and deep dive analysis
Strong understanding and experience in expense management including allocation process
Proven collaboration and business partnering skills
Curiosity mindset to understand results and influence expense opportunities
Strong continuous improvement mindset with experience in automation or workflow optimization
Experience in communicating and presenting to leaders
Ability to work independently and within a team
Strong PC skills with financial tools experience (e.g. Hyperion, SAP, Tableau, Workiva, Longview, etc.)

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.
