POSITION SUMMARY

Umoja is seeking a passionate and solution-orientated Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) Manager with experience in Biopharmaceutical Research, Process Development, and GMP Manufacturing environments to support our Colorado team and operations. The EH&S Manager will be responsible for implementing and managing programs and policies to ensure a safe, compliant, and healthy work environment.  The EH&S Manager will work closely with their Umoja colleagues across the organization to ensure a collaborative and employee driven safety culture.  Additionally, the EH&S Manager will work effectively with regulatory agencies to ensure practices, procedures, and Umoja facilities are compliant with local, state, and federal regulations.  This is a special opportunity to join a talented and dedicated team and to help build the EH&S programs, systems, and culture of a next generation biotech start-up.

This position will report to the Director of EH&S and is an on-site role based at Umoja’s GMP manufacturing facility in Louisville, Colorado.

CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES

Specific responsibilities include:  

  • Provide day-to-day EH&S support for Colorado operations, including the potential for occasional support outside of normal business hours.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain EH&S programs such as biosafety, confined space entry, control of hazardous energy, electrical safety, emergency response, hazard communication, respiratory protection, waste management, and working from heights.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory reporting, licensures, registrations, and permits for Colorado operations.  
  • Collaborate with Process Sciences and Manufacturing teams to ensure EH&S considerations are integrated into process design, scale-up, and technology transfer.
  • Partner with Engineering and Facilities to provide EH&S support for CAPEX projects including new lab builds, expansions, and equipment installation.
  • Provide oversight of on-site waste disposal service provider to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Lead the site safety committee and participate in multiple cross functional teams.
  • Design and deliver employee training programs.
  • Manage the collection of EH&S metrics and inspection data to drive compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct incident investigations, root cause analyses, and track corrective and preventative actions.
  • Interface with regulatory agencies, external auditors, and emergency responders.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering/Science, Health Science, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety, or other life science/technical discipline with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a Biopharmaceutical/Pharmaceutical EH&S role.
  • Expertise in biological safety, chemical hygiene, environmental compliance, and facility safety.
  • Strong knowledge of EPA, OSHA, and other applicable EH&S regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing EH&S programs in a GMP manufacturing environment.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence decisions that may have EH&S impacts.
  • The ability to work with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced, regulated environment.

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • 49 CFR 172 Hazmat Employee certification (or ability to obtain) for the purpose of shipping Hazardous Materials including Hazardous Wastes.

Physical Requirements:  

  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, protective clothing, and safety glasses.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including standing, use of hands, walking, bending, kneeling, and occasionally moving materials up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to work onsite 5 days/week
  • Ability to work on call and weekends as needed

Salary Range: $131,600 - $162,500
