Job Summary:

Basic Function  

The Manager, Data Engineering is a hands-on leader responsible for overseeing Central 1’s data ecosystem. This role manages the operation and performance of three key functions: Database Management, Corporate Business Intelligence, and the newly established Data Engineering Practice. 

 

The Manager leads the design and implementation of Central 1’s modern data platform using Microsoft Fabric, while ensuring the stability and performance of existing database systems and BI reporting tools. The leader is responsible for bridging the gap between technical data implementation and business requirements, ensuring data quality and availability for internal stakeholders. 

 

Role Accountabilities:  

Data Engineering & Modernization (Microsoft Fabric) 

  • Hands-on Engineering: Lead the engineering of new solutions on the new data platform using Microsoft Fabric (ADO, ADF, MS Purview). Utilize foundational DataOps knowledge of Python and Spark to support data transformation and pipeline development. 

  • Platform Implementation: Oversee data integration processes to facilitate seamless data flow between systems and applications and overall operational management of the platform including reliability of infrastructure, data storage planning, cost optimization, data pipeline stability, and Power BI user management. 

  • Scripting & Analysis: Utilize SQL and script development for advanced data querying and analysis. 

Database Management Systems 

  • Operational Oversight: Oversee a team of DBAs that designs, develops, and maintains Central 1’s database management systems, whether on-premise or in the cloud. 

  • Maintenance: Ensure the ongoing support, maintenance, and optimization of software systems to fulfill the organization’s information systems requirements. 

Corporate Business Intelligence 

  • BI Leadership: Lead the design, development, and implementation of Central 1’s corporate BI initiatives to meet the data  analysis needs of internal stakeholders like Treasury, Finance, and Risk. 

  • Consultation: Provide guidance and consultation of business intelligence software solutions throughout Central 1. 

Data Quality and Standards 

  • Quality & Tracking: Leverage reporting tools to track data quality, usage trends, and KPIs, ensuring that actionable insights are available to stakeholders. 

  • Best Practices: Enable best practices, and roles within the team to ensure high-quality data delivery, 

Team Leadership & Strategy 

  • Staff Management: Manage staff, conduct performance evaluations, and develop staff training plans. 

  • Resourcing: Establish annual business and resourcing plans, allocate resources, and manage budgets. 

  • Vendor Management: Manage vendor and SI partners and ensure third-party vendors deliver services per contract. 

 

Qualifications: 

Education and Experience 

  • A university degree in computer science, data science, engineering, or a related field. 

  • Minimum of 10 years relevant experience in data management, BI, or analytics environments. 

  • Minimum of 3 years in leadership roles managing technical teams. 

Technical Skills 

  • Platform Expertise: Proficiency with Microsoft Fabric is required. 

  • Languages: Strong understanding of SQL; foundational knowledge of Python and Spark is required. 

  • Core Systems: Familiarity with ERP systems and data management tools. 

  • Data Analysis: Ability to leverage understanding of data user needs to meet expectations in how data is deployed. 

  • Understands medallion layer architecture, dimensional modeling, and semantic models 

  • Has implemented and supported Enterprise-wide data governance strategies 

  • Familiarity with Tableau, SSIS is an asset 

Leadership 

  • Hands-on Management: Ability to balance strategic planning with hands-on technical contributions. 

  • Problem Solving: Highly developed analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills. 

  • Communication: Strong collaboration and communication skills to partner with key stakeholders across various functions. 

  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to think strategically and identify opportunities to increase business and improve operational efficiencies. 

 

Supervision Given: This role is responsible for directly leading a small team to meet operational deliverables, and informal leadership to other team members as required.  

 

Supervision Received: This role reports to a Director who provides general direction and conveys expectations. The incumbent is expected to function with a high degree of independence, and exercise sound judgment and discretion in making decisions, managing team members and ensuring the successful performance of the section in meeting business and operational objectives.  

 

Work Environment: The person in this role controls own workflow in accordance with operational requirements, which may require working outside scheduled hours at certain times. The incumbent is frequently seated, and some visual attention is typically required while performing computer work.
