Under the direction of the Director, Loan Review, the primary purpose of the role is to provide effective governance and oversight of the commercial mortgage credit portfolio and to lead the independent loan review of commercial credit transactions against the Company’s credit risk policies and guidelines. The incumbent is responsible for overseeing the structured, objective, and independent review of the Company’s credit transactions as selected by the Director, Loan Review or delegate. The Manager, Commercial Loan Review will provide leadership in making recommendations on training needs and modifications to lending guidelines and processes to reflect a best-in-class operation.
Additionally, the Manager, Commercial Loan Review will assist the Director, Special Loans in the administration and handling of commercial problems loans to maximize recovery efforts. Finally, the candidate will act as the secretary of the Watch List sub-Committee and manage required reporting.
Risk Management & Compliance, in adhering to applicable compliance obligations, including Privacy, Anti-Money Laundering/Anti-Terrorist Financing and internal Anti-Fraud Policy requirements, must remain the over-arching focus in carrying out one’s responsibilities as outlined below:
Commercial Loan Review
- Oversee the post-funding loan review for newly originated and targeted Commercial portfolio per the annual Loan Review Plan to objectively evaluate:
- The quality of the credit decision.
- Adherence to the Company’s underwriting policies, guidelines, and standards, including insurer requirements.
- The integrity of file documentation and data inputs.
- Ensure a representative sample of files for all commercial portfolios are reviewed to assess compliance HTC with Policies, Guidelines and Risk Appetite
- Perform ad-hoc analysis on Commercial portfolio to support the senior management, Credit Risk Committee or the Board's oversight.
- Ensure timely reports are generated and distributed to the business lines and appropriately reported at the Credit Committee.
- Present monthly Loan Review preliminary and final results through reports and debriefs with Underwriting VPs, Directors, and Managers within agreed timeline.
- Ensure the team adheres to applicable compliance obligations, including Privacy, Anti-Money Laundering/Anti-Terrorist Financing, and internal Anti-Fraud Policy requirements. Identify and refer suspicious files to Corporate Compliance as appropriate
Problem Loan Administration
- Assist the Director, Special Loans in the handling and administration of Special Loans to maximize recovery efforts and minimize accounts losses.
- Attend and provide effective strategy challenge in the monthly Underwriting Action List meetings.
- Provide assistance and training to commercial portfolio management and underwriting to promote proactive account due diligence.
Committee Participation and Reporting
- Develop and maintain the Watch List Sub-Committee mandate and manage/maintain the meeting agendas and minutes. Ensure materials are provided in a timely fashion.
- Develop and deliver succinct quarterly Watch List risk reports and submission to the Credit Risk Management Committee to ensure fulfilment of the Watch List Mandate.
Education Requirement:
- University degree in business, economics, finance or related discipline or related business experience
- Additional relevant accreditation(s), certification(s) are strong assets
- 5+ years related experience in commercial lending/risk management or internal audit, preferably in a regulated financial institution
- Sound, practical knowledge of commercial mortgage lending, particularly with construction financing, assets in transition, and conventional insured
- Sound practical knowledge of insured mortgage products
- Proficient with commercial property appraisal reviews
- Knowledge of commercial mortgage credit policies, standards and guidelines
- Strong interpersonal relationship building and listening skills
- Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment
- Excellent written / verbal communication and professional maturity
- Solution-focused and takes initiative to work effectively and efficiently within established guidelines
- Strong organizational, time management, research/ analysis and attention to detail
- Able to multi-task and flourish in a fast paced, deadline-driven work environment
- Solid knowledge of MS Office
Expected salary range: $93,000 to $105,000 per year.
