Manager, Clinical Financial Modeling (US)

The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Associate Director, Business Operations Management, as the Manager, Clinical Financial Modeling, you will be presented with an exciting opportunity to broaden your development horizons in an area of strategic importance to the business.   You will be assisting with clinical trial financial modeling for the Clinical Operations group, as well as supporting the wider Finance Business Partnering requirements for CSL’s Global R&D organization. You will provide support in all financial analysis, accrual management and modeling. You will establish a deep understanding of the Clinical Trial process at CSL to effectively model costing for the length of the trials, including in-depth knowledge of all of the trial variables that either directly or indirectly impact cost. You will provide financial guidance and insights to help drive short- and long-term study goals.

This is a hybrid role, which offers a combination of an onsite and remote work schedule.  #LI-hybrid

The Role:

You will be focused on the Clinical Operations group within the Portfolio Development function and play a key role in the delivery of the R&D Finance Business Partner model. Core activities will include:

Financial Planning and Performance Management:

  • Support the rest of the Clinical Finance team in developing up-to-date study financials in advance of both month-end and planning cycles, maintaining the models utilized.
  • Support the financial planning and reporting requirements for Clinical with close collaboration with POE and Clinical Operations to understand the implications of study and contract dynamics.
  • Assist with Monthly Financial Reviews and Quarterly planning cycles to drive deeper understanding of study dynamics, financial implications and future sensitivities.

Value and Insights:

  • Serve as the financial modeling expert within the Clinical Finance team, building robust financial models for all active studies and maintaining them in collaboration with the remainder of the Clinical Finance team for governance, planning and month-end cycles.
  • Ensure alignment of study budgets and timelines and address variance to project plan, working in accordance with Sr Managers of Clinical Finance to bring to PSTs and follow R&D Decision Making Framework.

Other Accountabilities:

  • Champion the Business Partnering mind-set; support strategic decision-making within the Clinical Operations function and across applicable PSTs.
  • Provide financial support for Clinical in association with future external collaborations/acquisitions (including due diligence) via developing standard templates for different TA and study sizes.
  • Be an advocate for changes that support the R&D organization in Finance process improvement activities.

In addition, you will:

  • Collaborate with the rest of the Clinical Finance team to support GPLs, PSTs and Clinical Operations with finance guidance and decision-making support via robust clinical financial modeling.
  • Develop and maintain models utilized to support PST & Clinical Operations requirements to develop budgets and forecasts by helping teams understand the full study financials and impacts of any changes in scenarios or assumptions.
  • Ensure study level business activities within remit that support the TA/PST model are successfully delivered based on the requirements of the PST strategy, appropriate international regulatory standards, and within the agreed timeframe and budget.
  • Collaborate with Senior Managers, Clinical Finance to build and maintain robust study costing models for studies within remit, ensuring clarity around assumptions to BPs and dynamism within model.  
  • Work in partnership with Clinical Operations and POE to ensure study assumptions for all studies are up-to-date and reflect accurate assumptions for both planning and actual cycles, based on both future or ongoing study dynamics and future or actual contractual implications.
  • Clearly define customer needs and review both ad-hoc and routine reporting and analytics to ensure they meet internal customers' needs and are well understood.
  • Contribute to or lead global or functional specific projects as required to improve the business, Function or Finance's performance.
  • Participate in developing tools, techniques, and best practice approaches to support the ongoing development of the R&D Finance capability in support of the Finance Strategy and R&D Finance Vision.
  • Support the development of complex business cases for PRISM governance and other complex business analysis and modelling to provide additional guidance and insights to senior business leaders.

Your Skills & Abilities:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business or Finance; MBA or other advanced degree a plus. 
  • 5+ years' experience in R&D Business Operations or Finance roles, with extensive experience in budgeting and forecasting, analysis, including the development of business cases in a Pharmaceutical R&D environment or similar industry.
  • Sound leadership and interpersonal skills.

  • Timely decision making and priority setting, organizational agility, ability to work cross-functionally and across all levels.
