About the Role

The Mechanical Engineering (ME) Structures Manager will lead a team of 10 to 12 structures engineers and actively contribute to designing and developing spacecraft mechanical systems and subsystems. This role combines team leadership, hands‑on engineering, and cross‑functional collaboration to advance Northrop Grumman’s strategic space initiatives.

The ME Structures Manager will work with engineering and program managers across multiple business areas to develop and enhance the technical capabilities that drive our business. In this role, the successful candidate works closely with direct reports, business area leaders, and peer departments—including manufacturing, analysis, quality, and program management—to build engineering talent and improve tools and processes. The manager will deliver value by applying expert knowledge in structures design and fabrication in a team-oriented, customer-focused environment.

Specifically, the details of the position are the following:

Position Responsibilities:

  • Performs as a working manager, leading a team of 8–12 mechanical structure engineers while contributing individually (80–90% direct labor, 10–20% indirect labor).
  • Responsible for the technical performance and filling staffing demands of the Mechanical Structures Group
  • Provides expert contributions on critical programs and supports improvement initiatives, including employee engagement.
  • Collaborates with Senior Leadership to establish and enforce common design practices, standards, and policies within the Mechanical Structures discipline.
  • Assist in hiring staff to build and maintain a team with broad capabilities that meet business area objectives.
  • Identify training for staff to support a broad range of capabilities across the company as well as employee growth
  • Work collaboratively with Program Managers across NG facilities within the overall framework of the organization
  • Be an active and engaged manager; know what programs employees are working on and the tasks they are performing on those programs
  • Provide general management, mentorship, motivation, guidance, and support to assigned staff
  • Support the Capital procurement process by recommending tools, equipment, and facilities, needed to support the organization
  • Support Mechanical IRAD initiatives - Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent and a minimum of 6 years' experience or 4 years with a Master's degree.
  • Has demonstrated strengths in Structure Design and Manufacturing and strong technical skills in Creo Parametric and other design engineering tools
  • At least 5 years of managing or leading programs/projects
  • Possess leadership skills to develop, organize and execute design activities, including building teams, and assessing technical performance
  • Possess the ability to gain internal support, operate independently with limited supervision and feedback, and the ability to establish a solid working relationship with technical staff, division managers, and peers in the business areas.
  • Ability to work on-site full time at the Dulles or Colshire campus. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Possess highly proficient CAD and Windchill skills to best represent the design group with a strong technical knowledge base
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Extensive experience with the fundamentals of spacecraft layout and design
  • Active DoD TS Clearance or ability to obtain one.

Primary Level Salary Range: $121,000.00 - $181,600.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
