Job Summary

The Marathon Los Angeles Refinery located in Carson, California is seeking an experienced Major Maintenance & Tank Manager to lead the planning and execution team responsible for major maintenance events and tank outages across both Carson and Wilmington Refineries. This role is accountable for safe and compliant execution, schedule and cost control, contractor performance, and continuous improvement of work management processes to support a reliable 24/7 operation.

The available schedule for the position a 4/10 schedule - Monday- Thursday - 6 AM - 4:30 PM, on call required 4-5 times a year for the full week, after hours calls are required as needed and support Outages as needed.

Production-centered support of a 24/7 operation; must be available to support off-hours needs during critical work, tank outages, and emergent events. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the Major Maintenance and Tank Leads, planners, schedulers, and execution resources to deliver safe, high-quality outcomes.

  • Partner with Operations, Craft, Reliability, Engineering, Inspection, and HSE to align priorities and ensure work is executed safely, efficiently, and with minimal impact to production.

  • Drive work process excellence (planning/scheduling, risk review, readiness, job package quality, and post-job learning), including preventive maintenance and reliability improvements.

  • Develop long-range plans and integrated schedules for major maintenance events, tank outages, and emergent work; define scope, resources, contracting strategy, and critical path.

  • Own outage readiness: coordinate isolation planning, permit requirements, confined space/line breaking planning, lift plans, scaffold strategy, and materials staging to enable safe execution.

  • Manage contractor selection, onboarding, performance, and field execution expectations; ensure appropriate oversight, productivity tracking, and compliance with refinery standards.

  • Manage cost and schedule performance for assigned events, including estimate development, purchase requisitions, change control, forecasting, and closeout.

  • Ensure work management discipline in the CMMS (e.g., SAP PM): maintain data quality for notifications, work orders, job plans, task lists, material reservations, and weekly schedule development.

  • Support tank integrity and regulatory compliance by coordinating with Inspection/MI and Engineering on inspection scope, repairs/modifications, documentation, and return-to-service requirements.

Education, Experience and Skills

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date.)

  • Must have a minimum of 8 years of maintenance, turnaround/outage or tank/terminal experience in refining or petrochemical industry.

  • Must have demonstrated experience planning and executing major maintenance events/outages, including scope development, scheduling, estimating, and contractor oversight.

  • Must have working knowledge of safety programs and permit-to-work systems (e.g., LOTO, confined space, hot work, line breaking).

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft in Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint.

  • Must have excellent communication and collaboration skills across Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Inspection/Fixed Equipment and HSE.

  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical. (May require climbing stairs/ladders, walking long distances, and working around confined spaces and elevated work areas as needed for oversight.)

  • Must have field presence in operating units and tank farm areas with exposure to noise, heat/cold, weather and industrial hazards.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license. (MPC determines valid status.)

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.

  • Travel Requirement is 5% or less.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior leadership responsibility in refining, petrochemical, or heavy industrial environments is preferred.

  • Technical degree or bachelor’s degree in engineering, industrial technology, or related field is preferred.

  • Experience managing tank inspection/repair programs and outage execution (API 653 familiarity a plus) is preferred,

  • Proficiency with CMMS systems -SAP, Project Manager , Primavera P6 is preferred.

  • Turnaround/outage leadership experience, including critical path management and integrated schedule coordination is preferred.

  • Budget ownership and cost-control experience for multi-million-dollar maintenance events is preferred.

  • Demonstrated success leading work process improvements and reliability/maintenance best practices is preferred.

  • Experience with contractor KPI management, productivity tracking, and performance-based contracting is preferred.
