Job Description

Maintenance Worker

Qualifications

Technical training in building maintenance is preferred.

Technical Competencies

Ability to perform general maintenance tasks (i.e., electrical, carpentry, welding, plumbing, and painting).

Ability to read and interpret manuals and blueprints related to equipment and systems using a variety of tools, plan work and maintenance schedules.

Read, write, and communicate effectively in English.

Problem solves and use of project management principles.

Work safely, following established safety practices and procedures.

Has a solid understanding of the Health and Safety Act.

Experience

Three to five years relevant experience and/or knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, plumbing, carpentry, and heating and ventilation systems.

Examples

Environmental Management

  • Observes and monitors all areas of the facility for maintenance requirements and carries out repairs as required.
  • Performs mechanical maintenance and repairs to equipment.
  • Performs general maintenance and repairs to plumbing, electrical system and carpentry.
  • Refers problems requiring specialized work to outside contractors and monitors work performed.
  • Conducts regular maintenance rounds.

Inventory Control

  • Identifies and maintains adequate inventory to facilitate timely repairs.
  • Participates in budget preparation and control. 

Customer Service

  • Ensures the safety and privacy of residents.
  • Acts as advocates for the residents.
  • Works in collaboration with other staff to ensure minimal disruption to residents.
  • Participates in developing action plans to resolve customer complaints/concerns.

Physical

  • Regular lifting of heavy objects.
  • Exposure to hazards from use of tools and power equipment.
  • Exposure to heat, biochemical agents, and weather conditions.

Communication

  • Documents and implements the preventive maintenance programs.
  • Ensures that contractors work in accordance with company standards.
  • Advises facility management and Engineering department of any issues associated with work performed.
  • Establishes and maintains communications with other departments.

CQI

  • Participates in facility wide CQI activities and focus groups as required

Occupational Health and Safety Accountabilities

  • Carry out all assigned duties in compliance with applicable Occupational Health and Safety legislation and Company policy.
  • Follow safe work practices as directed by their supervisor and as required by the applicable Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
  • Participate in all required occupational health and safety training.
  • Use appropriate equipment and wear personal protective equipment or clothing, as required by Extendicare.
  • Report any known or identified health and safety hazards or violations to their supervisor.
  • Refrain from any conduct that puts themselves, workers, contractors, or others at risk.
